You might have seen a thread I posted about the urge to always own a VW bus......... retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=108734Well, once again the urge got too strng and I succumbed to it. Bought this last night.......... She's a 1981 2 litre aircooled Transporter. The bus started life as a border patrol vehicle for the Bundeswehr in Germany. It was then sold on to the German Red Cross and used as a staff transport vehicle. They re-sprayed it from green to cream and fitted it with blue lights and sirens, and in about 2007-ish it was imported to the UK by the infamous RetroSteve at Eastfalia. He sold it to the guy I just bought it from who removed the signwriting and blue lights / siren etc (but they are all in a box in case I decide to re-fit them anytime). The bus is lowered 80mm and sits on rare 16" BBS alloys. But the really rare thing which clinched it for me was the 4 foot sliding metal sunroof Plans are to just smoke around enjoying it this summer then maybe some sort of re-fit over the winter. This one is the third ex- German Utility Vehicle I've owned. I used to own these two - the bay is ex-Feuerwehr and the T25 is ex-THW (which is the German Civil Disaster Contingency Force) Can't wait to pick it up later on ;D

After just a couple of weeks of ownership (and the longest journey undertaken so far being the 15 miles home the day I bought it), we packed up the bus with bikes, dogs, surfboards etc and headed to Cornwall, then up to Snowdonia for 10 days of surfing and mountain biking. 1000 miles in 10 days with the only preparation being a quick check of the oil level and faith in the reliability of old VW's Loaded and ready to go.......... Cornwall.......... and up a mountain in Snowdonia.......... Apart from a knackerd CV joint my faith in the old girl was rewarded by 1000 miles of trouble free motoring

Wow I love that monster sunroof. Why do they have those? quite some of the Type 25 for red cross, Katastrophenschutz or Police used to have that; the best ones were the "Bereitschaftspolizei" (a police unit , which was for emergency cases, riots etc.), they had two sliding doors and the huge roof ... they also had huge nozzles for the wind screen with a lots of pressure, to clean of tomatoes and all the stuff that was thrown against them

The bus is is really good nick considering it is 31 years old but having been a working vehicle - first for the German Army then as a German Red Cross Ambulance - it has picked up a couple of battle scars along the way. It was absolutely rust free but there were a few dents here and there and holes where bits of military kit, blue lights and sirens had been fitted and the hles had been poorly filled when they were removed. I only meant to get the holes in the roof from the blue light re-filled properly and a small repair on the sliding door but we got a bit carried away! That's all the prep done - now ready for paint. Stand by for pics of the finished article (next week hopefully.......) ;D

I did think about it but they are almost the last bit of extra kit left on it from it's days with the Bundeswehr so I decided to keep them
