Hi folks, my son has his first retro motor, and being young is not liking points and condensers and wants to convert to electronic, so I am after a bit of advice on what people think are good units and where to get them from. Car is a Mk1 Fiesta with Bosch dizzy. Sorry its a dull question, have some pics of his car. Thanks.

being young is not liking points and condensers No excuse! In any case it might be a useful skill to learn in case whatever electronics he fits fails and he can use a spare set of these funny old "analogue" components to get him home...

I've bought a dizzy and coil from a mk2 (though I neglected to get the extra wiring, I'm sure I'll manage..). Haven't changed it yet but should be a fair improvement. Mine suffers in cold/damp starts and the position, right below the inlet manifold, is a right pain in the hole to get to. Still wouldn't do any harm for him to learn to set them up in the meantime though EDIT: In fact, there are plans afoot to put a Ka engine in mine so there's little point in me fitting it for such a short period of time.. You'd be welcome to the bits for what I paid for them. Send me a PM if you're interested

Surely the advance curves will be different on a later engine or does it still work well?
Either way, I understand that Accuspark can do you a cheapish ignition kit as do H&H Ignitions (who can also refurb the distributors for you too).
As Seth said, you can learn a bit from points (and none of my cars are even on points these days). Having a dwell meter can help in setting them up in addition to trial and error with the gaps to get the gap right (using the dwell meter: Maplin sell these). Also, use P&C from a reputable source (E.g Bosch, Unipart, Lucas etc.) and not cheap pattern bits available from anywhere (Intermotor). I for one have noticed less failures with the mentioned brands.

I've never compared ignition curves, but the later one is from an 1100 Valencia, and would be going onto an 1100 Valencia. I can't imagine there'd be much, if any difference. It's a common and well documented swap. People have used them on bigger engines too (admitedly, I can't imagine it'd be much cop at anything other than standard tune)
