something i've been planing to do for ages. and i'm pretty sure there's plenty of other people thinking, doing or done something similar. but what things do i need to know? are petrol fuel lines ok to run diesel? need to use a sucker to run the servo, but a diesel alternator will have one so should just be able to plug that in? wiring up the rev counter will poss be a problem. may need to change the final drive ratio to account for a lower reving diesel engine. any info and other tips appreicated.

Isn't the easiest way to just get a diesel vehicle of the right quality and stip it for the parts you need?
Diesel will flow fine through petrol pipes in terms of the chemical aspect but the delivery pipes can restrict power if they are too small for the engine they are feeding. Diesel engines use less fuel though. So probably going to be fine.
If you use the transplant method then you won't need to worry about the alternator as the donor engine will come with one.
Rev counters normally work off a pulse. The donor engine will be broadcasting a pulse from somewhere to drive the rev counter in the donor vehicle. Probably the ECU as well.

as above , you want a donor car or a complete engine with all its bits dependong on what diesel engine you use and what car its going in etc , ive done a few di engine swaps over the years now and as long as it mounts up to the box etc then your away,.

Using a doner is the easyest way TBH also worth noting most diesels use heavyer/thicker flywheels so may not be compatable with a petrol box.

Annoyingly, the Citroen XM doesn't.. as I found out. It uses its hydraulic system to help with power assist for brakes. I just removed the servo

I just removed the servo personly i would have just fitted a vac pump from another engine, on the LDV XUD they are sealed so no oil feed needed, 2 bolts and a longer belt, probably take less time than removing the servo

sounds like it's similar to the pug 205 remote vac pump - something I plan on using for the next rebuild. The remote servo however, was half filled with brake fluid anyway, so needed new seals. Replacing it with 2 foot of pipe, was far quicker and easier
