is anyone in the know with MS systems??
I'm a complete n00b to it really, ive done a bit of searching and had a read through some highly complex pages. I'm not the most patient person when it comes to reading mahooosive webpages so I'm looking for someone to give me the "lowdown". I'm not worried about building the system myself, i have dabbled in electronics before.
i want to use it inconjunction with a pair of Jenvey 40mm throttle bodies.

i've just bought one! A megasquirt 2.2.
However, i can give you RAG ALL advice, as I have yet to rivet all the resistors and that together - never mind fit it to an engine! Looking forward to it though.

I think I know a guy who has built a couple. I'll check with him see what he says.

gofasterpinch in da house: who knows about...mesgasquirt
Lately been involved in a supercharged 34 3 window Rod running megasquirt although not personally involved with the setup of the system but been around some real frustrating times during setup and I can only point out how important it is to close down all functions like MS update, Anti Virus and other programs working in the background on the laptop you use while programing, the optimal is a computer with only Windows and Megasquirt software to get it all right. Sounds like basic computer science but often forgotten and with frustrating results......

the rolling roader round the corner doesnt like them, nor does the gaffer who has a phd in some sort of electricery sort of shiz, this is only really due to the build quality and the really badly installed setups that they have tried to map etc. the boards havent really got a life expectancy over about a year due to them cracking because they arent resin dipped. this is all what ive heard off the guys at the rolling road centre and someone with a phd though, not my personal opinion or experience. they are thinking about marketing them over here resin dipped and i spose if they are installed well there shouldnt be a problem. i can get an omex 500 for a hundred or so more than a prebuilt megasquirt and ive been told ill save that when it comes to get it setup mainly because we specialise in omex and they wont have to spend as much time on it. thats not to say it cant be done well nor ami saying that its particularly rubbish, its just you get what you pay for imo and there still needs to be a few hundred spent improving the basic package to get it to be a decent aftermarket management, id still be doing it i couldnt get myself omex on trade price though

I'm with SeventyNine here - I side with Dave Walker's opinions as voiced in PPC, saying that he'd never seen one that:
a) Worked properly
or
b) Delivered the goods
If you knew what you were doing and well able to, I'm sure you could make something of it - but I'd rather just splash out on a reputable ECU. At the end of the day, it probably won't cost you much and I'd be much more confident in it.

Thats two negatives, both from folk with their own engine management systems to sell...
I'm sure theres loads of shonky ones around, cos its genuinely quite ambitious to build one and get it all up and working, but equally there are lots of success stories. They are only as good as someone's skillz0rz at building one like.

someone said to me a while back 'would you rather spend £300 on a broken megasquirt or £450 on working omex?'
made me think ;D ;D

the rolling roader doesnt sell anything aftermarket.
my friend ryan who posts on here now and then echo's the same sort of views and he works for a fairly large rolling road cell and has had first hand experience of mappign them.
remember that to map an aftermarket ECU from scratch is going to cost a good £3-400, if it takes someone twice as long to map it because they arent familiar with the setup then any savings made are soon lost.
imo, get friendly with your local rolling roaders, find out what they are most familiar with and go from there.

They are only as good as someone's skillz0rz at building one like. I didn't end up going for megasquirt because by the time I had added it all up the build cost didn't work out tooooo much cheaper than getting an Emerald or similar box. If you've got deeper pockets bargains can be had on ebay : cgi.ebay.co.uk/MOTEC-M48-ECU-IGNITION-EXPANDER-NEW-HALF-PRICE_W0QQitemZ110008677449CR500Dom and I were looking at Subaru ECUs as they are remappable without re-flashing apparently... but investigations kind of hit a dead end...

Thats got to be the ultimate hasn't it, robbing an ECU from something in a scrapyard and re-mapping it to suit your engine. Go-faster tat nirvana!!!! I think these yanks www.zdyne.com/ have cracked it with honda ECU's.

ive heard something about doing it with pugjot mi16 ECU's too.
we have the abilty to remap a lot of completely boggo ECU's at work, we unsolder the fueling chip, load a new table onto it and resolder it back on, i was faffing with a pugjot boxer van the other day and free'd up a fair few horses ;D ;D

Tuning is a little easier with megasquirt if you have a wideband controller. All you have to do then is give it A/F targets and it tunes to them, no rolling toad needed. I have also heard that a rolling road will only get you about 90% of the way there, with on-road mapping needed aswell as driving brings about conditions that cant be replicated on the RR.
A good friend of mine was looking into remapping stock ECU's, by the looks of things if it has the right chip then all you have to do is find the section of code and reprogram. This is why I'm not doing it, I'm a spanner when it comes to programming!

yeah, we have a guy in poland who does the reprogramming for us, we send him the original programming, and then he sends us back the modded one, place called unitronic www.unitronic.ca/

The think about the Megasquirt is if you built it yourself from the plans using scrounged bits and bagrin bobs you can do it for next to nothing. There was a guy on one forum who'd built one for like $80. If you end up buying a pre-built one then you arenn't making the big savings, same as anything else really. I'd also echo what Seventy-Nine says about going with what your local RR'er can set up if you are going to get it mapped by someone else.
Horses for courses.

i don't see the point of buying a pre-built MS system? surely the whole point is its DIY??
i'll have to see what our man at the rollers thinks.

Look at all the options first, even if your really hot on electronics. There are lots of alternatives out there. A mate rates the 'adaptronic' system.. www.adaptronic.com.au/index.php (nothing to do with me...)

I'm following this thread with interest, as Megasquirt is something I'm looking into. Has anyone here used one and had success?
