evenin'
sorry not been on here much recently but my excuse is a good one..been getting my hands dirty on the 309 track car!!! ;D
however.. i was wirebrushing the front wishbones (lot of surface rust) ready for hammeriting and noticed that the front left spring looked a little "odd".... in that it had broken in three places..rotten all the way trough!
it had just done the 200 mile drive down the motorway only 2 weeks before!
so anyways, got some AVO front spring on order - is it a tricky job to change springs or can it be done by a mechanical novice like me? I understand the physics of most things but not the skill to change much .... hence the track car..
what tools will i need? anything special? a cramp to close them up ? you get the jist..
all help greatfully received..

You will need some spring compressors (probably)

you'll need a pair of spring clamps and possibly a ball joint splitter. if its on a pug, you might need some strange french spanner/socket sizes, 16, 18, 21mm. should take a couple of hours for a novice with a haynes jokebook, taking account for probs and mistakes

I took the springs out of my 205 diesel, and to my surprise their free length was about 2.5 times the compressed length!!! Well OK maybe thats an exaggeration but they were very long and it was a real sod to get the spring compressors off and then get the new springs squished down enough to be installed. I tried to work out in my head what the benefit of this might be compared to using shorter (and thus easier to install) but proportionally stiffer (thus giving the same spring rate when installed) springs, but in the end I gave up and drank a cup of tea instead.
I guess it must mean a more constant stiffness over the length of the suspension travel.

On a 309 you'll need. 19mm socket for wheel nuts 32 or 36 mm socket for driveshaft nut 16 or 17mm socket for track rod end 13mm socket or spanner for top mount nuts the bottom pinch bolt is a 16mm nut on an 18mm bolt The hardest thing to undo are the drop links, sometimes you can get spanner on them but some types don't allow it so you'll need mole grips or stilsons. You'll need a pair of spring clamps and i think an 18mm offset ring spanner and 8mm allen key to undo the top mount from the shock. I think thats about it, been a while since i worked on a pug though ;D ;D

I do tend to cheat on this kinda thing......
compressed air on the spring compressors and possibly the longest ball-joint separator known to man makes life SO much easier.
Got it down to 1hr to fo the whole car, including saturday hangover. KWAL.
