Sometimes the internet has a way of throwing up stuff unexpectedly. Following on, on the Mercedes Benz Ponton thread I started, I went looking for a DKW/Auto Union estate I found for sale in SA some time ago, but in stead, found this link..... Loads of pics on there, some you may like. www.classiccarsinrhodesia.co.za/old%20photos.htmlAnd my favourite.... My dad used to wear Safari Suits like this to work, everyone in Africa did. Looks like some of the pics did not copy, so best you go dig around there yourself.

I'm heading down to that part of the world (well South Africa and Mozambique), on business at the start of August! I shall be on a mission to snap some local RR.
The last time I was in Maputo, I was amazed to see about a hundred mid 90s, UK registered cars, trucks, buses and even an ice cream van lined up in the port for resale. I shall dig out the pics.
Curious to see what I see this time!

Norm, that might not be drifting. Distinct possibility that could be known as " crashing" Great find Grizz. The Opel estates do it for me. Love the TR street drag racing photo too.

Seth, I suspect this time, with Jimmy Shield in charge, it would have gone on to win the race. Loads of those pics really hit the Nostalgia button in my head.

LOL, Seth. You're prolly too young and not aquainted with roadracing, but just put down a book on Vic Elford and others from the 1970-72 period of WSC racing. And, fraid to say, drifting was not only specifically discussed in the book. But it wasn't the candy-assed 2-3 gear variety at today's stadia, that's really nothing more than synchronized swimming.... But high speed drifting in 917's and 512's in 4th and 5th gears at 150-180MPH - balls to the wall.
Now this chap here, Grizz's man, looks spot on in a TOTALLY standard drift like ALL the USAC Indy Car guys used to do back when they ran on dirt courses as part of the USAC (pre-CART) Indy championship. There was this Italian fellow, name of Mario Andretti (and his brother), who drifted all through the 50's and 60's against guys like AJ Foyt and Bill Vukovich II and Parnelli Jones..... ah, the halcyon drifting years of yore - way back before it was "invented" in Japan. LOL!

LOL! You know I was joking Norm In know what a dirt track car looks like ;D Oh, and you mean this Vic Elford... We did recently host a bunch of your roundy-roundy types over this side of the water too...

Vic's a proper race driver. That Chaparral with the A/T completely flabbergasted other equally good men (like my friend David Hobbs), what with its rather involved method of shifting into and out of gear in the GM Turbo Hydramatic. I saw where Vic really got down to it at GW this year, some spectacular photos abound on the internets of the Chappie in motion at the Fest....
And, my, Bobby Rahal of right-here, Columbus Ohio! Former world manager of racing for Ford, before they handed it off to Lauda. That's the car Bobby won the Indy 500 in, a week or two before Jim Trueman died of cancer. It was a magic moment in the pits. But Bob's no real roundy-rounder. He's of the post-USAC CART brigade of "newcomers" trained within the SCCA roadracing ranks. (With a brief garnish of F3/F1 pipping about in Yurrup for Bobby....)
