Just make sure to set equal sized fires under both axles, otherwise one may burn faster than the other due to adverse geometry. This is officially the funniest thing you have ever said. Go print yourself off an award at Vistaprint. ;D |

It's illegal to sell dodgy partworns. Also you get them on every car you buy. THIS. With part worns you can inspect the inside of the tyre and all sorts before the go on your car. When you buy a second hand car which has tyres on it (as most do) you take blind faith as to the age and whathaveyou of the tyres. Buying part worns off a reputable second hand tyre dealer/fitter and getting some up the car boot sale or off eBay are different things too. |

Slight thread dicversion: Problem i've found is that they seem to be 75% the cost of new tyres, but with half the lifespan left (Been on the lookout for four 165/60/14 - most places seem to be ~£100, and then i'd need fitting, valves and balancing) - i can get kumhos fitted locally for ~£190 all in) |

Look at the sidewalls for perishing, and bulging. You may have to get on your hands and knees to check the insides on the rears though. As for the age of the tyre date of manufacture is required to be printed on the sidewall |

I got them fitted at my local scrap yard who supplied them. You can chose the tyres yourself before fitting and you get a receipt so no worries there.
At £11 a side you cant complain!

I think one reason why a mere tyre-fitter would bias towards having the wider tyres on the rear is that most drivers have never experienced oversteer, whereas understeer is the typical behaviour of a FWD car pushed to its limits.
If an unexperienced FWD driver gets oversteer, he/she would probably lift off, making the problem worse, rather than booting it and applying some oppo to pull the car back towards the intended path.

As far as radial/bias/crossply mixing goes, Radials to the back mixed with anything, crossply to the front. Bias go to the front if mixed with radials, but at the back with crossplys.
also, it is legal to run radial front/crossply rear as long as your rear axle is twin wheeled.

I understand that is indeed the general feeling in the trade - it's the same reason that most tyre fitting places will fit a new pair of tyres to the rear rather than the front. However, for 10mm difference in width, I'm not sure I'd be too concerned either way. |

I pay £5 to £15 (usually £10 to £12) for part worn, fitted and a half assed balance. That's for a branded tyre, new price £40 to £60 usually and they are usually still legal by the time the eBay auction ends....  |
