Not a retro in the true sense of the word, but I'd be amazed if in twenty years time we weren't lusting over these in the same way we lust over hideous 70's unloved motors..... The Surprised Scorpio Am I sick in the head or do they have hidden qualities that I can subconsiously sense, but nobody else sees? I really like them but Ford must have sold about 6 judging by the amount for sale. I shall soon be in the market for a new daily driver to replace the mongdeo (180k without a cambelt and I'm stuffed if I'm spending £400 on a £300 car!), and preferable it needs to be a) Reasonably speedy. We're not talking fast, but sub-11 0-60 to match the mondeo. b) An estate. Big bouncy dog and piles of junk take it in turns to fill the boot most weekends c) A diseasel. Sadly getting tired of 20mpg around town, just a little more would be nice. So i found one of these, or rather the estate version, on the trader..... five hundred sheets with a full mot. Electric everything, bumwarmers, leather. 2.5TD has 130bhp and chugs to 60 in 10.6sec.

The styling gave me nightmares when it first came out but now I like them. Would like to see one on 7-spokes.

Sounds like an excellent plan.
Proper 'perverted' motoring - ugly & proud.
Have a look at 'phatphord's one for some style inspiration.

Hated it when it was launched, and was comprehensively buried by the much prettier Omega, despite Ford bleating "it'll grow on you, like the Sierra did". But now.... I'm seeing potential and like Pogweasel said, Phatphord is showing the way! I especially like the back end - looks really American, but whereas when it was new it was "Ugh it looks so American", now it's more "Wow, it looks really American!" if you get what I mean... Don't like the estates as much cos you don't get that back end. 24v Cossie FTW!

Yeah do it. As a cruiser it will be fine, so drive like a SAGA customer or buy a diesel, or epect to spend a moderate amount on petrol, the 24v v6s are good. I'd have one for sure, similar suspensin as Sierra so should (or be made to) handle nice. BARGAIN 'Phatford' leads the way

and i just bought another on the weekend... £150 with 6 months tax, needs emissions sorting for mot (swap over all the new mot friendly emissions parts from mine), So for in essence £57.50 I got a 109k mile car with full electric pack, full black leather,ac that works,a 3month old bosch battery, 4 3month old pirelli p6000 tyres,a cd player. Happy? Yes,it drives so nicely and all is well with the world. Now i can start stripping it and selling all the bits i don't need... Oh and sell the lexus. They are a much maligned car,but well worth trying. Steer clear of the 24v cosworth engines cos they have autobox and camchain tensioner issues, the 12v v6 is no faster than the 2.0,and the 2.3 tends to eat themselves. If you want something quite fun to drive,go for a 2.0 with a manual box, and good luck finding one! The diesels are pretty solid, but no rocketship. stay tuned for desert brown, wide arches and 3ft high shifters...

thanks guys... nice to know i don't need to book myself in with those friendly guys and the padded hotel. sadly it will have a job to do - family transport - so the diesel bit is a definate, and the estate bit would be handy (despite the fact i'll have no end of "could you just give me a hand moving....." calls from family) but i do like my lux-o-barges. I really enjoyed driving the Quattro with it's electric goodies, aircon, computers and original 90's size-of-a-house carphone! checking fordscorpio.co.uk (a really good site) it seems diseasels were slightly slower than i thought, but better mpg which is cool. and they thankfully never made a diesel automatic

check the sierra GT thread, maybe you already have. those 2.0 engines are good alrounders not bad economy for good performance, should cruise nicely on motorway etc. but a diseasel maybe what you need, don't know owt about em though. always personally steered clear of diseasels.

I love those late Scorpios. Especially black ones with the black-chrome bits and big shiny wheels. Great shape, although I too hated them at the time!
A guy across the road from us has a late Estate one. It's not up for sale, but I'd be tempted if it ever were to be!

Trying to work out if its worth keeping mine or flogging it on,or breaking the bits out of it that i don't get the hron for- auto dip rearview, wheels with newish tyres, leather wheel with gubbins, wish it had a manual box as it could be stripped for track fun. Have thought about swapping the box over with the manual in mine, but i think there's a lot of electrical gubbins with it too. Poopy. Does cruise nicely on the motorway at 90 though. Just not fast like the lexus

My girlfriend was going to get one of these for the motorwaymobile. You can get a fully loaded one in mint nick for next to nothing. The thing that broke the deal was the insurance which came up at £850 for the two of us compared to £350 for her Scenic. Eeek.

yeah for some reason they are stupid to insure. the one i've just bought is an auto and feels so slow. When i queried why they were so much to insure I was told it was cos they were an executive car. hmm...

helps explain the price to buy then. you know what the other smaller option is. or ring around, some one will insure one of these big cruisers, surely.

don't get me wrong, you can get cheap insurance, but when faced with £399 tpft for my lexus LS (250bhp 150mph) and £360 tpft for a 2.0 scorp you can see why people don't go for them. Shame cos they ride so well on the road.

I always liked these! The estates are better looking than the saloons, and I'd love an Ultima in black. Hard to find any ultima in manual though I reckon I'll definately buy one within the next few years!

The estate just looks confused..... they put the funky front on it, but the back just reeks of 1980's Granada. They could have done something along the lines of the saloon I'm sure.....
Never thought to check the insurance, ooops! Never mind I've insured worse, my quattro was only about £360 i think at group 16.
