Sure this must have been asked before, but is there a simple guide out there detailing how to paint a vehicle.
I'm looking to do a cheap rough job on my van and wondering if there are any DIY guides, best ways to do this.......remember the emphasis on idiots guide......
Been looking into rollering, but unsure of prep work that need to happen, or the amount of paint / thinners to use for final actual paint job......
Any help greatly appreciated!

As it says in the link, preparation is vital to a good finish. I'm still experimenting with combinations of brush painting and rollering, but now that I'm getting close to being done I can see where some of my preparation has been poor and where it's been good so I know that the spots I've been lazy/rushed on are just going to give me a lot more work now that I'm nearly finished that I wouldn't have had normally.
Additionally, provided you don't go waving the roller around like a madman, you can paint in a tight spot without bothering the neighbours. I regularly have 2 fairly new Mondeos either side of my car when I'm working, no more than a foot away, and not a drop of paint has got on either. In fact, I make more mess of the cars either side of me on the street when I wash mine than when I paint it!

That's impressive, I'm going to do this at one point! How long does it take to harden - does it run at all? What about applied with a roller to crevices?

I'm using rustoleum from www.lawson-his.co.uk. it doesn't run if you do it right, takes about 4 hours to be just about touch dry and about a week of good weather to harden enough to sand and polish. Use a foam brush to paint gutter rails and crevices.

This is mine after 2 coats of rustoleum mixed with 20% thinners (rather than white spirits) It was a warm couple of days when I did it and it was touch dry where I started by the time I had finished the coat. I did get a few runs (from using a normal brush for the corners ect, couldn't find any foam ones at the time) but settle well over the following week and a few of the blemishes have gone themselves Prep wise, same as if you where spraying, if there are imperfections underneath, it will show through and of its not key'd in well (or cleaned well) the paint will flake of over time. It does cover well, I didn't use any primer It is well worth doing though I've used about 1.5ltrs so far

Yep, still got the mini, but have had a bit of a loss of mojo on it and it still looks very similar to those pic's but with some dust on top

Surprisingskoda that scooby looks immense, i'm sure its just a fabia underneath right?.......Also being a idiot, when you say keying the paintwork, are you fine sanding the current paint job to give the new paint something to stick onto.....maybe i'm not such an idiot as i think......although i am driving the intended vehicle daily so would probably need a few days off the road to it to be preped and allow the paint to dry......that right.....as i have no garage! What grade sandpaper/disks is best for keying then? Craig 1010 the mini is looking ace, you should finish that bad boy off.......although if my brother see's it he'll probably try and buy it off you as hes that way inclined! I recon its a case of just going for it to be honest, the van has faded paint and it really doesnt matter if i make a shoddy job of it because its not going to be any worse than its current form, and i cant really do any damage as its a extra layer of paint, and being an idiot does it really matter.......better get ordering some paint then......

( When i was thinking about doing the rollering google-fu turned up a website where it was suggested you used thinners to make it go off quicker then you could spray it. The weather is good today so i might pop a coat on the standard today, if the kids let me out.

Keying is flatting off, so just use 800 grade paper with water (that's what I've used in the past). It also creates a completely flat surface as well as a nice grip for the new paint.

Although I used 200 grade and had big grooves in the paint, close-up on the flat panels you could see it. Then again i painted it in one day so meh.

So have started to expieriment with rollering...... Original paint on the left........unsanded in the middle, and prepped on the right.......quite happy with the results but a few more layers needed, brave enough now to start on the van itself...... a bit orange peel as you can see in the light reflection, but not really aiming for factory showroom, so with a bit of sanding a few more coats it could come up much better!!!
