Hi all I need your help I am going to soon be in the position where i can afford to get another car and i really want a large luxo-barge for some occasional-use wafting. I will have about a grand to spend and i have narrowed it down to the following..... - E38 7 Series BMW
- X300 XJ6 Jag
- W140 S Class Merc
- Maybe a GS300 Lexus
So having never have owned any of these cars before, your advise, experience, comments would be greatly appreciated. As its only going to come on for special occassions, fuel consumption isnt really an issue, so it boils down to stuff like what toys they come with, how they drive etc etc So yeah, good chance i will be swayed by the masses so comment away! Cheers JJ

I've just bought a 1996 Lexus LS400 (bizarrely cheaper to insure than the GS300!) with 176k miles on the clock (for well under your budget) and it's great! I've only had it a week or so and driven 150 odd miles in it, but so far, *everything* seems to work, and even on it's 18" rims the ride is smooth.
It bloody shifts too, floor it at 40mph, it kicks down into 1st and flies!
Still prefer my W126 though, if only it wasn't full of holes....

having had 3 x300 jags id say thats one to go for for a grand would get a you a 4.0 sov or even a xjr if your lucky or just a very nice 3.2 sport
they have a retro look drive great pretty quick and not to bad on fuel and unlike most big flash motors parts are quite cheap and easy to work on a all round great car the x300 jag
a xjr is top of my want list at the mo

Beemer or the Lexus, I'd be wary of the S-Class, and the Jags just seem too cramped on the inside.

I have to say I am leaning towards the BMW or the Jag personally, I just don't want to miss out on something better through ingnorance!

the jag is cramped inside, but I'm 6'7" and drive them ok, they are more of a drivers car than most luxo barges, nice ride and good handling, personally i love the looks to, factory low as stock, roof line is 10cm lower than a GS300 even before it gets hit with the stick. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

I'm sure it does better, but its so fun that I can't seem to get more than 10mpg. My foot is permanently buried in the floor when driving it though! Might get another soon, a newer one, so I can have double glazed tinted windows as well. It's more opulent than my house.

Another vote for the LS400, seriously, go see one in person before you pass judgement, my dad's is absolutely lovely. It's a 1996 Mk2, covered 180k nearly and works all day every day. Bloody fast too

Another vote for the E38 here... Heard nothing but amazing things about them and you got to admit the squat and wide front end looks sexy as hell

I only have experience of the Mercedes W140 and the Jaguar (I have had a late model XJ40 for many years, which is basically the same car at the X300) Personally, I would avoid the Mercedes. They are lovely cars, if a little too big, but the one my brother had from the late 1990s to the early 2000s was unreliable and cost a fortune to fix. I cannot exaggerate how expensive it was to run. Admittedly he was in the main dealer network but he had garage bills which came to two or even three times your entire budget a couple of times! ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) The thing was an electrical time bomb - and that was a decade ago. In contrast, my Jag has been superbly reliable and surprisingly cheap to run. It has needed only service items to keep it on the road, rust issues aside. It is cheap to insure and more economical than you'd think - I get 22-23mpg running round and up to 29-30 on a run which is pretty amazing for a big old car. Mine is only the 3.2, but the 4 litre uses hardly any more. The X300 isn't quite as nice inside as the XJ40, but mechanically is probably even more robust and they don't suffer the electrical problems which blighted the early XJ40s and gave the car its terrible reputation (undeserved on later cars anyway). The thing to look for on an X300 is rust - people say they don't rust, but they do! Particularly check the rear wings, thay can rot badly and it can be expensive to fix. The sill to floor pan join is another area, as are the front of the sill ends. A 4 litre X300 Sovereign is a lovely car, and the Daimler version is even better if you can find one. I imagine the XJR will be very expensive to insure. I don't have any experience running the BMW but they are an excellent car, more modern than the X300 - but with less charm. The Lexus was undeniably an engineering tour de force when it came out, but their style is too sterile for my taste and I prefer something with more charisma. David Have you been tempted back by an XJ40, Popuptoaster? I remember you from XJ40.com! ;D
