Hey, its me again Can anyone point me in the direction of decent places to get hold of retro's? I just watched a victor 101fc for 8 or 9 days on ebay only for it to be removed the day before it ended. Same thing happened with a purple mk2 cortina, it always seems to happen with the cars i REALLY want. I know of autotrader, though its bad for old cars, as well as car and classic, gumtree and classiccarsforsale.co.uk Anything i should be looking at on top of that?

Don't forget that most people don't really expect a car to sell on an eBay auction. It's just as likely to be treated as an ad and sold outside the auction. Get straight on the phone to the seller if it's something you like

Why not try here as rmad said, or failing that work smart on an internet auction site and go through the back door as it were?

I have tried here, i check the for sale section every few days. Also, i always ask if there is an end early price, i did with the victor but the seller just ignored me.
Damien i mentioned in the original post that i look on there.
Nothing else i should know of?

There's a few different websites, carandclassic.co.uk is one I quite like. Then the usual eBay/Pistonheads etc.
Gumtree is a site I have spent more time on recently - Search united kingdom instead of just your town and you will find some interesting stuff on there.
With eBay, I find asking sellers for a buy it now price or if they'll end early can sometimes irritate them so the best way I have found is to get their phone number and have a chat then mention it when you go and view the car with pound notes in your hand. This goes for anything, not just cars.

rodsnsods and NSRA classifieds have a few good uns. So does Driftworks, ovalbangerchat and the like occasionally. Depends what you are looking for, great cars for sale on Mopar UK and Eurodragster.
eBay seems to be the daddy though

i cant remember the last time i actually saw a classic car f/s on here. most of it is barely 'retro' let alone classic. or just hideously overpriced as with 90% of private sales.
ebay, ebay, ebay. its the first place 90% of the polulation think of when wanting to sell something- even those without computers or the skill to use them- how many 'listed for a friend with no internet access- ring this number auctions do you see? especially for classic cars sold by the 'older' generation. lots is the answer. plus, if youre bidding on an auction, the marketplace decides it value, not the seller. ive held out on cars before and ended up buying them on ebay for a LOT less when the seller got desperate for cash.
what funkula says is bang-on. you gotta pickup the phone. from a sellers point of view, its pretty hard if not impossible to distiguish the timewaster from the real buyer by email or ebay messages. i have a sliding scale of response, ranging from polite, concise but brief answers to questions with my phone number stuck on the end if they want more info(otherwise id be sat rambling on about stuff all day replying to everyone) to not even bothering to gratify their illiterate demands or insultingly low offers with a response.
you have to show youre keen, and not messing about. for the right car, you have to be able to drop everything to sort it out, no 'hmm ile think about it for a week' or ' ile come and have a look if i can get my girlfriends mums cat off work for a couple of hours to drive me'. a serious buyer will go straight to phone, ring immediately, want to view asap and be bringing cash with them when they come. id also expect them to ring/text before leaving and let me know how long theyll be, so i know when to expcet them. i don't mind picking people up from the local train station, cos if they've made it that far off their own bat, it shows they're keen.
the last two cars ive bought have both been off ebay, whats more obth were bought sight unseen (which i wouldnt recommend!) i followed the formula above and got both quite easily. one went for around market value for its condition, but this was less than what the seller told me he was expecting to get for it over the phone, in the two lengthy chats i had with him, but it was also in worse condition than what he said it was- and ive been doing this long enough to ask very specific questions...... so thats another thing, the longer you have someone on the phone, the more you can see how genuine their 'story' is. never, ever believe anything a seller tells you unless they can back it up with recepts, photgraphs or other documentation. the other one i bought was a real punt, it was a £100 BIN parts car that was supposed to be shagged, but turned out to be miles better than what id ever hoped for, even though it had been flood damaged, all the brakes were locked on, it has 2x rats nests in it and a hole rusted straight through the bootlid (none of which the seller saw fit to mention!), but as i paid less than its worth over the bridge, i wasnt complaining.

Don't forget that most people don't really expect a car to sell on an eBay auction. It's just as likely to be treated as an ad and sold outside the auction. Get straight on the phone to the seller if it's something you like Most of the cars I've put on ebay have been sold before the auction ends. I've bought many cars this way too. I wouldn't try this over the phone or on an email, I go and view the intended purchase and try my luck then. Most people will entertain the idea of a sale outside ebay when you are on their driveway with cash on the hip, even if the ad states differently. Sometimes it'll be because they like you or they can see how enthusiastic you are about the car. Many owners just want their classic to go to a good home.

I just persuaded my sis to buy a 25 year old car unseen from Ebay, if it turns out to be a dog i'll be in trouble, luckily it was fairly cheap. :S

I found it really annoying at first when loking for things on eBay, that you bid on them and then it ends before the end of the auction. However it has now got to the point that you HAVE to ring the seller, go and see the car and offer cash there and then to take the car away.
Sometimes you may get a bargain, other times you will have to pay a bit more.

you're struggling to find cars to buy?? - jeeez, I wish I had that problem!
- it's the money to pay for them I have trouble finding!!
kfw ps - defiantely worth ringing up on ebay ads, I've just got off the phone with my latest purchase's seller - couldn't be nicer to deal with, and he's glad that it's 'going to a good home' - hehehehe!

Or there's another tactic. If there's something specific you're after, put a WANTED ad on Gumtree, or in the free papers like Loot, Buy and Sell, Ads for Free.
You may have a seller call you with something he was toying with selling or 'hadn't got around to advertising'. You've a chance of picking something up at a fair price with no competition, rather than having an Ebay auction snowballing until the guy with the biggest wallet wins.
Don't get me wrong, I still trawl eBay, but my Gumtree WANTED ad last week turned up the right car within 5 hours. When I get it home, most folks will be surprised what I paid for it.

Like Benkh says. Selling cars within clubs is like trying to sell snow to the eskimos : they already have plenty.

I have to agree with dez on the RR classifieds. Most the really old stuff sold on here is often overpriced and ive seen hundreds of people joining to sell their cars just because they think we'll pay more cos we're into old cars.
All your help has been brilliant so far, especially dez's, i think once i do sort a car i wont have a problem getting another one further down the line because i'll be able to go and look and get it myself, but for now, i have to stick it out.
Thankyou again.
