ive been thinking about this and the claim you can ovalise a drum hitting it(which i thought you could only do overheating them). I'm 99% certain a cast iron drum will crack before it plasticly deforms. i decided to test this theory. this is the drum that 'took some removing' its actually more smashed now as i had to break some more off to finally remove it- you can see by the look of it, its been given more than a bit of a tickle with a king size adjusting stick. ive just put it on the lathe and spun it up. despite what the rest of it looks like, and the numerous cracks running through it, its still perfectly round.........

I recently had to help a local clown get his clown car through the MOT (not an easy job with self-detaching doors and googly headlights mounted on springs) anyway one of the brake drums was stuck. Now i'm sure you're all aware that these clown cars have oval brake drums from the factory, for obvious comedy reasons. I couldnt get the drum off so wellied it to the max with my special hammer so I could fit some new clown shoes in the brakes. Anyway when i got it back together the clown feller reckoned the brakes were all over the shop and when i investigated it turned out I had bashed the drum into a perfectly round condition! So don't scoff, on the basis of this story it is perfectly possible to knock a round drum into an oval shape.

Obviously cast iron is world famous for it's plastic deformation properties. Thats why they use it to build bridges and trains.

have you tried it with the wheel on ? pop the bearing cover out and remove the nut fromt the axle then either use a big copper hammer (hyde side) on the rim to get the drum past the lip , it works well on small stuff

If it wont come off smash the curse word to bits, if nothing else its great to vent your anger and of course it will be off the car, only draw back it you will need a new drum but nothing beats the feeling of pointless destruction

In my experience as a mechanic, if copper hammer don't do it and shoes are stuck, worn lip in drum is stopping drum passing over it. 2 levers 'jemmying' at 9 and 3 o clock should loosen it. It don't hurt to slacken off handbrake cable at lever or compensator if all fails. If shoes are gonna be changed a bit of wd40 or similar thru a small tube between the drum/shoe can speed things up. ...you could also clamp brake flexi hose and open brake cylinder, if its a seized cylinder. When removed get a stone to remove fat lip in drum. To be fair if said Belmont is that seized, drum more than likely fooked, be about 25 quid new, so hammer away !!!

I put the nuts or studs back in across from each other and place a long solid bar between them and jack it up but be careful the car may lift and the drop with out WARNING so place it on axle stands with some thing soft for it to land on and wear goggles and glove OR Same as above but remove the jack and use your body wight and jump up and down on the bar

Hadn't noticed this thread before, but I did it like just this last weekend. Cylinder was seized, adjuster wasn't budging and there was indeed a tiny lip inside the drum catching the stuck-but-not-binding shoes. Two big screwdrivers and some gentle persuasion with the lump hammer got it off after a while. Unseizing it all and getting it back together was a pig of a job though as I was 'refitting in the reverse order' and someone had previously managed to ram the handbrake strut thingy in back to front (to make it match the wrong diagram in the Haynes manual).
