its my sons 14th birthdya end of the week and hes shown a real interest in getting a BMX, he already has a mountain bike but I can sort fo see where hes coming from as a lightweight bike would be good fun for lobbing about, but I stopped riding these about 20 years ago so got no idea whats good, whats bad, or what will make him a laughing stock if you see my dilemna.. so quite simply.. whats a good midrange bike that wont kill my bank balance or kill him... by thanks heres some pics of the ones I had... (courtesy of photobucket) thanks

Problem is, you have to have the dogs curse word bike atm.. Most of them seem to be more of a fashion statement.
But as psycho said. Either go for a highend built bmx, Or spend on a frame and fork and build it up yourself? Or even better, Fund his build?

don't know how much you intend to spend, this is a relatively low end bike, you can go up well beyond £1000 if you wanted www.wiggle.co.uk/felt-mystic-2011/that looks like a fairly good deal, felt bikes are pretty good. and it's got the all improtant micro drive freewheel that seems to be so popular at the moment, also for scene points you may want to remove the front brake, tech trcks aren't cool unless you foot jam em' these days

Here's my recommendation: Great spec, all the trendy bits (seat/post combo, 25:9 gearing) and ridiculously light (unlike me!). The Deluxe website doesn't have them listed any more but you can still pick one up at a drastically reduced price (£230 instead of £450) on ebay. It's a limited edition too, so your son probably won't see another. I was so impressed that I bought two! cgi.ebay.co.uk/2010-Team-Bike-Olive-deluxe-BMX-dirt-park-street-bike-/160615875502

Dyno or GT is a good budget BMX, at the end of the day it will be thrashed and no point in spending mad money. Some of the budget bikes are even quite good. Just stay away from chrome frame tyes in the budget market.

Rmad.. liking that quite a lot !!! RW.. I'm lucky in the fact that hes not a trend follower and will in his own words "be proper happy with a bike that does what it should"

You can buy the components that will match up to what you want to ride in particular.

I would build one from the frame up. BMXs are surprisingly easy to build. As for a starting point GTs are good strong frames for a resonable price but they are quite heavy compared to the equivalent wethepeople and mongoose makes (I know I had an 08 GT Tour ;D ). Wethepeople is my favourite but don't expect them to be cheap. I know because my mate has an 08WTP Nova and he's spent well into the hundreds on different parts. I will warn you now though. don't let him watch any BMX videos such as Dave Mirra, Mat Hoffman that crowd. I guarantee parts lists will be endless after that (speaking from experience) as no mattter how new the part he has, there will always be something newer or better he wants. If you can go for a smaller sprocket setup. the typical 44 to 16 tooth setup found on cheap BMXs is often a killer . After riding with that setup on the GT riding my mates WTP with a 25 to 9 setup was ridiculously easy. And freecoasters a re a pain in the sometimes, especially if you get cheap ones.

Unfortunately I cant post a lik as I'm on my phone, but google 'welshpitbikes' and look on their site for the 'mafia clip' bmx. Welshpitbikes are a dirtbike manufacturer but theyve brough out this new bmx. I'm well into bmx'ing and my bikes a semi pro 'Kink', which has cost about £600. Those 'mafia' bmx's have all the kit on them, 25:9 gearing, pivvie seat and post, and they weigh about 24lb, almost as light as mine, and lighter than most bmx's circa £300-400 . Oh, and they cost just under £190, brand new. I was abit weiry of them at first, thinking they'd be absolute curse word, but my mate recently got one and having built it up and ridden it, I can safely say its sweet as a nut Being cheaper then most bmx's of the same spec, the frame is not the expensive cromoly tubing, but instead hi tensile, but unless your son is gonna be going pro (which would be awesome), this isnt a problem

If he is just going to abuse it, why not see about a second hand Huffy bike. My old one was £10, and i sold it on again for the same (wish i hadnt though).
Also try looking for a Felt bike.
(all advice above is by someone who know absolutely nothing about bikes, so could be all rubbish ;D)
