	Hi guys, I've had some problems with my battery lately with it not holding charge. It'll stay at about 11v while charging. I carry a spare battery anyway, but I've been attaching this spare to the main one when I need to start it until I could get a new one. Anyway, yesterday while out and about, I pulled over at the service for a drink. When I got back in I went to attach the jump lead onto the main battery and it was bellowing smoke and liquid was bubbling out the top of it. I ran round to the passanger side and got the battery out. Smoked and bubbled outside for about another 10 minutes then stopped. I attached the other battery (about half the size) and was fine. First time the volt guage has been reading 13v as well when driving. I take it the main battery is knackered then? What could have caused this? It doesn't look that old.

	I think the alternator is overcharging, that seems the common problem with battery's.

	I think your battery has a dead cell - if the plates touch each other it will turn a 12v battery into a 10v one - and this is why normal 13v charging has boiled it and also why it only charged to 11v and was rubbish

I've just remembered, my mate was putting the battery in and out a lot while we was sorting the wiring on the rear lights. I bet while he was doing it on his own his dropped the battery. It did start playing up ever since me and him did a load of work on it for it's MOT.

	The cells can break down and touch each other like that as well so yer mate might be alright. Can even happen to new batteries, especially cheap ones. Anyway, batteries do explode, so save yourself the grief of having to clean battery acid out of the car after it has exploded and just keep that battery away from the car.

I was going to let him off anyway I can't imagine him not saying anything if he did drop it. Don't worry, the closest it's going to go near a car is when it travels to the scrap yard tomorrow.
