I bought one of these a while ago for my Starlet: And I need to get it fitted inside this: (or one similar to it anyway) Has anyone had any experience of fitting LSD's at all, or can recommend a someone to do it for me? I've heard that the preload & backlash need setting up, which I haven't got a clue about, so don't want to do it myself & mess it up! Any help gratefully received.

I haven't got a clue either, but the pictures on Racer86's blog look similar, no idea if it's any help! racer86.com/

I'd try assembling it and check the gears as it rotates. You can get carrier shims for it to adjust the lash, etc. If you've got the whole thing on the bench it's a learning experience, but a specialist garage should be able to do it for you.

What you need to try and do is make the amount of play the same after you have fitted the diff. It does not have to be 100% accurate but don't take the curse word. If it wobbles aprox 1mm in either direction before you disassemble it then it should be as close to that as possible when you've put it all back together.
In theory, because you're only swapping out the middle part, if you put everything back together the same way as you took it apart with all the same shims in the same places then it should be fine.
Check the backlash by putting finger and thumb on either side of the diff CROWN-wheel and see how much play there is. There are more scientific ways to do this but you're not exactly rebuilding the thing, just changing one bit which shouldn't make any difference to the measurements.
The diff will move left and right between the driveshafts and that is normally controlled by shims. Make sure the shims you take out go back in the right order. Then the diff CROWN-wheel will be in the same place as it was and the backlash will be the same.
Easiest thing to do is to feel the backlash before you take it apart. Fit the LSD. Put it back together. Feel the backlash again, if it feels wrong then take it to someone 'professional' for a second opinion.

Also, depends on the design but check there are no plungers inside the ends of the driveshafts where they push into either side of the diff. If it has plungers and the LSD has no centre pin like some of them do then you may need to extend the plungers so the drive shafts continue to meet in the middle like they normally would.
