my nearest 'proper' halfords is pretty good for bikes... the guy there always points you towards the reduced-to-clear 'proper' bikes than the same-price cheapo ownbrand stuff. he also refuses to sell full-suspension stuff to anyone at all, let alone for kiddies christmas pressies.
sadly for car stuff it's pap.... endless arguments over which relay is right for my scirocco electric windows (it's literally a on-off switching relay, pin-for-pin identical to their 'fog light' relay... they point blank refused to sell me one till i left, returned and picked one up without asking), too much reliance on what it says in their books (i'm sorry but if a battery fits a 1996 mk1 mondeo, and i have a mk1 mondeo that just happens to be 1997 registered, that battery WILL BLOODY WELL FIT) and the overbearing presence of things that end in the letter Z.... trimz, spoilerz and dialz. bloody ripspeed shyte.

Holfords pro tools are pretty good with the lifetime waranty until I broke a 3/8 extension cracking off flywleel bolts. I waited three month for a replacement in the end I just got a refund then walked to the shelf picked up the same bar and baught it.
As for last minute parts they do price match to my suprise when I needed a dizzy cap they wanted £22 I told him they were only about a fiver down the road(I was sunday afternoon)so he price matched to six quid..

yea they have their place, they are a highstreet store and thats what they do, they deal to their target audiance. you don't go into tesco and expect to buy the a nice bottle of champagne and some caviar now do you? no, you go to a fancy french wine shop and a fish thingy. i don't know what you expect halfords to be like? personally i don't think they are an amazing shop, and the staff seem to be the biggest problem, but they serve a perpous, steering rack boots for the kitten, the owners club cant get them, but halfords sorted me out for £5! i agree that their tools are good, as is their satin black spray paint, and bargain bin (4 spax shocks for a mini = £20, bosh two on back of the kitten, other two onto ebay for £50!) if i want car parts i go to the autofactors, they give me trade as I'm always in there for somthing, if i want non specialist tools and sundries i go to halfords. but yea, the staff suck massive balls and have no idea what they are on about and their parts stock is balls unless you own a vectra or mondeo.

You can still get quite a few service bits for BMC/BL cars in there if you know what you're looking for. Their application charts were actually quite good until a few years ago. Also their paint is good and I've used it loads on models as it sprays really nicely and they have a really good range. Currently hoping there's a dark green that is close to the Sun-Tor colour.....

Did I tell you about the time I let the Halfords oiks do an alternator test on my Plymouth? Well, they were having difficulty getting a reading and decided that the alternator must be dead an need replacing. Not being in a hurry I'd let them go at this for a good ten minutes before suggesting I aught to start the engine... Classic Only in halfords ;D ;D ;D ;D Mind you Falcar over here are even worse one of these days I'm gonna go in and ask from spark plugs for a diesel or maybe plug leads for a diesel (do diesels have plug leads or am i fallin on my ??)

I have always wanted to ask a Halfrauds employee for Saxo style lights for a Lexus. Or a flux capacitor for a Deloreon. The list could go on and on. ;D

I have always wanted to ask a Halfrauds employee for Saxo style lights for a Lexus. Or a flux capacitor for a Deloreon. The list could go on and on. ;D lol, more apprentice jokes. my old lecturer at college was asked to get a long weight from the stores, many moons ago. after the penny dropped (it took a while), he came in the next morning carrying a package wrapped in brown paper, which he handed to his foreman. what he had taken in, all nicely wrapped, was the long lead weight used in a sash window. foreman threw it at him. back on topic, I got a bemused look in the audio section of hellfrauds once, when I asked what quality two way component sets they had. isn't that they're stock'n'trade? this conclusively proves that the motor staff are actually suffering from being dead from the shoulders up at least they are in my local one

I assume this place you speak of is one of the faceless nationwide franchisy type auto parts/accesories store... We've got a place called Repco (known as Ripco, or turned into an acronym for Rip Every Poor C**t Off), which by the sounds of things is much the same.
I went in there for a cambelt (after the work wagon's one snapped) and helpfully asked the dude behind the counter "hey, I'm after a cambelt for a 1989 Toyota Corolla, 4AFE engine." Was met with the reply, "sorry, we don't have cambelts."
After some discussion, and the mandatory conference with fellow counter-jockeys, it later conspired that they did indeed stock what I was after (jeez... no surprise there) and that it was actually called a "timing belt" and my jargon was totally incorrect....
Now thankfully, I have a good friend working at the local branch, which means plenty of great discounts and the assurance someone who knows their stuff is working there.

I assume this place you speak of is one of the faceless nationwide franchisy type auto parts/accesories store... Yeah you got it. I suppose they have a market, and we're not it. They must be doing something right though as they're not showing any signs of struggling in the market place. Independent factors are far better, and I reckon they deserve our support and custom as the market must be pretty tough for them. But I agree - Halfords professional tools are really very good. I've had a lot of mine for about 8 or 9 years and they're still going strong - only ever busted one or two things!

So hang on. I'm getting a distinct impression from this thread. Halfords is great for "professional tools." That's my experience too! Glad it's not just me. ;D I'm

the plate on our mondeo is a Halfords special.... they ran out of space towards the end so it's all bunched up i do have to say though Halfords has saved my bacon a few times with emergency tools and parts - my stuff has a habit of breaking at 7pm, after the local motorfactors is shut but before halfords closes. in particular, when i sold my Speedlines from the rocco, i needed to get them up to Rotherham for 8pm - went to take them off the car at 7pm and my wheelbrace sheared!
