So happen to be passing HellFrauds this afternoon, think I'll pop in & see if they have any of the heater hose I need for my COToW.
Here's what happened:
Pogweasel [to shop assistant]: 'Eater 'Owse.
Shop Oik: Pardon?
PW: Hose for heaters. Half inch internal.
Shop Oik: What's it for?
PW: Ummm, isn't that a bit obvious?
Shop Oik: No, what vehicle?
PW: Does it matter? All you need to know is I need some 1/2in heater hose.
Shop Oik (clearly confused by imperial measurement): How big is half an inch? shop oik proceeds to estimate half an inch between thumb & forefinger. His conclusion is that this: |<-------------1/2 in ------------>| is about right
PW: Is that what your girlfriend tells you is half an inch?
Utterly blank look on face of Shop Oik. Like I'm speaking Welsh or sommert. Do they lobotomise these kids on their first day induction?
PW: Never mind. Have you got any?
Shop Oik: I'll go an' look.
PW waits patiently
Shop Oik: Is it this?
PW: No. This is 5/16ths. It says so on there points to clear labelling on hose 1/2 inch is bigger than that.
Shop Oik: OK goes back to look for some more Is this it? is holding two more rolls, both of which are clearly 5/16ths
PW: er.... no....
Shop Oik: I don't think you can get 'half inch' then. Hang on, I'll get the supervisor.
PW: No, ta, think I'll go to the shop in town.
At the shop in town I got exactly what I wanted, straight away, for less than £2 a yard. Amazing!

My local Halfords is useless for anything since they redesigned a few months back! I went in mine to look for some simple vacuum hose, looked around for ages, radios no, shiny wheels no, universal spoilers no, huge rack of air fresheners no, overpriced batteries no, then looked over at the closest member of staff who looked like he'd been sent up to bed without supper and decided not to bother and order off the Internet instead.

Did I tell you about the time I let the Halfords oiks do an alternator test on my Plymouth?
Well, they were having difficulty getting a reading and decided that the alternator must be dead an need replacing. Not being in a hurry I'd let them go at this for a good ten minutes before suggesting I aught to start the engine...

I went into Halfrauds a few years back for vacuum pipe. I was asked which car it was for. I told them it was pretty universal. They still needed to know which car!! I should have said BS Nymph ;D I got my pipe from A1 Stores. The guys there know what there talking about.

I had to go and get a multimeter the other night and Halfords was the only place open, after 10 minutes of searching through rows or accessoriez, stickerz and spoilerz, I found quite a smart Gunsons one for £13 which I didn't think was too bad. But there is just so much cr@p in there, universal 4" exhausts and multi pcd wheels And I've said it before but I applied for a temporary job there when I finished uni and they turned me down, what does that say about me ;D

Sorry if I'm being pedantic, just something anyone who works in the 'real' cycle trade feels very strongly about! Let me know if anyone needs a bike though-be able to sort out a deal for ya ;D

I have a ram raid style attitude to halfrauds (literally when this car nicks all my money) - in, grab out ASAP.
Unless I have some free time to find some diesel spark plugs or annoy the rip(off)speed staff, local motorfactors (CAM's) roool all over Halfords especially seeing how I have a 20mins trek for the privilege of being badly served by halfwits.
Although something that surprised me the other week was - a knowledgeable member of staff - in their Wakefield store. Went in for some oil when picking the Viva up but didn't know the capacity, the bloke behind the counter had it off the top of his head, it was correct as well! Kudos.

Halfolds is utter pish.....
Apart from a fine line in tools. Halfruads Profesional Range (lifetime guarentee) are fantastic tools.
Unfortunately Halfords is going the same as most high street stores, everything to a price...
Halfords used to be run by people with an interest in cars, not any more.
I bought a new car the other week, and the VW salesman told me that he really was not "into" cars. Whereas back in the day (Aunty used to manage a ford dealership) I remember car salesman being car enthusiasts.
I try to use local motor factors or places like Euro Car parts for bits rather than Halfrauds, but as I say the tools are brilliant.

My 1/2 drive and attachements are utterly awesome for the price. Also when I break torx' you can go in and they'll give you a replacement.

Good if you want a mountain bike or some camping gear 'friad I'll have to disagree about being any good if you want a mountain bike! i have to agree with this. i would never ever buy a bike from there. the cycle "specialist" at my local branch looks like he still has stabilizers on his bike. also agree about the tools, i don't have any, but the ones ive used are great.

..... I bought a new car the other week, and the VW salesman told me that he really was not "into" cars. Whereas back in the day (Aunty used to manage a ford dealership) I remember car salesman being car enthusiasts. . That is the problem with a hell of a lot of businesses today - run by suits who are only interested in the bottom line and to hell with 'customer care', so why should they employ anyone who has a genuine interest in the actual product or service...? Our local Halfrauds is selling more non-car related gash than car related now, but at least it has a good line in weld-thru primers, etch primers and tools....oh and the bird on the tills is still human enough to have a laff with as you pay (and she's gorgeous...... ;D)

On a more positive note my local Halfords knocks a pound off a tin of stone chip paint if it's dented and I found a pair of original replacement recoiling seatbelts with Ford Anglia listed on the box. Fiver each. Bosh. Job done.

Got to be honest, I don't expect a lot more from Halfords. But come on, let's go easy on them it's hardly a career move is it? Plus when I need some oil or wiper blades at three on a Sunday afternoon, I can get them. For me they provide a service that I can use at will. Actually, they set their stall out a little on the high side, I always snigger at their 'fitting' price list. Head unit... *Insert keys and remove. *Remove din plugs *Oh, and aerial. *Replace on new head unit *Slide back into dash. Wow. You're my hero. Yeah, screw 'em, it's only because they put themselves on an altar that we can knock 'em off...

I agree, Helfrauds can be quite convenient, and also amusing at times, but bloody infuriating at others.
I went in the other day for a big can of carb-cleaner. Couldnt see it anywhere, asked the spotty oik tending to the vast array of induction kits, he looks at me as if I'm stoopid and leads me to the aisle full of polishes and the like... "No, not CAR CLEANER, CARBBBBBBB CLEANER". "Wots that" he replies... Not wanting to spend the afternoon explaining Carburetion to the lad, I just told him to forget it.

never bought anything car related from hellfrauds, my cars are too old (pre 1996). however, I needed a bottom bracket for my daily pedallo, and the guys upstairs knew exactly what I needed and even got a vernier out to measure it and then to my amazement he looked in the stores, then walked over to the specails bin and handed me one at half price in a damaged box. now if the imbeciles down in the car section were half as knowledgeable and human the store might be a better place. and, no, I wouldn't buy a whole bike from them.
