Argh, jobs you wish you'd never started... I'm removing the side rubbing strips from the Cadillac and I have a ton of sticky residue from the double sided tape which was holding them on. I've tried all manner of solvents, but the stuff isn't easy to budge. I've tried gasket scrapers, a chissel, and my best result was with a stanley knife blade used by hand. Its slow, fiddly going and its taken 90 minutes to get to a point I reckon a toffee wheel would maybe get the last of it off with. Any thoughts on how I can speed this process up or I will go insane

Stanley blade is what I used although I did get some more success with a heat gun and the blade. If you get the angle of the cutting blade as close to perpendicular to the paint surface as you can, it does cut straight off. Good luck!

hot air gun and your thumb has worked best for me, you get nice blisters though. I've heard great things about 3m's toffee wheel, i'll have to try one next time i'm removing some trim.

toffee wheel only really works on fairly thin residue. this is like 2 or 3 mm thick goop.

few laps round the oval would see all that residue removed ak, I'm 99% sure I've had success in the past with dousing stuff like that in lighter fluid, and leaving it to soak, then using like a stiff plastic spatula to scrape at it (better than your thumbnail getting ripped off, less likely to dig in than a blade)

Ihave a gallon of Synthetic Thinners so that is as good as lighter fluid I reckon. Problem is with it being hot and sunny it does evaporate quite quick.

I've always used carb cleaner. It took 20 year old foam tape off in a couple of minutes - it reacts with the glue and you can pick the whole lot off in one go straight away. It doesn't harm the paint either, just wash it off afterwards.

You could give paraffin a try, it won't evaporate off and might dissolve or soften the sticky stuff.

Carb cleaner will work! I tried thinners, but it's not as reactive as CC.

I've used panel wipe in the past. If I'm repainting the panel then I'll use a stanley knife blade.

I tried that but couldn't do it - the paint underneath is all scratchy and it's like dragging your nails down a blackboard! It's hard work as well!
