bought this bike a long while back for £30, the gears were stuffed and the triple clamp forks were far too soft for my riding some dmr forks and removing of some other parts later + adding a few bits from the pile and some new wheels I had this mocked up. I need a freewheel, which will most likely be 16t , what I don't know is how to work out what size front chainring I should have. it's 26" wheel and will be used as an oversized bmx / weekend hack until bits snap off. anyone know the best ring size for the front? also anyone got a chain tensioner laying around? ta

been doing some reading. From what I can gather 32 / 33 chainring seems to be the common choice. will give it a go and see how I get on.

Depends is its trials, single speeder (as in city bike but it's still a dmr lol), dirt etc. I use a 36t and 18 on my dmr on 24'' and its fine. H

Most common size for a general purpose singlespeed is a 2:1 ratio, so your 32/16 would be right for that. If more on road, then you might prefer a 34/16 just to go slightly higher. Just shout if you need to know anything or are stuggling to find what you want-I've been working in the bike trade for the last nine years so can sort most problems out.

awesome! cheers chap. will try the 32 and see how I get on. can you reccomend a decent headset? I had an FSA pig on my old bmx that seemed ok. Don't really want to spend more than £30 on the headset. Any of the FSA ones are still pretty good, I'm a fan of the Orbit Equip at the moment, very similar to the old XL2, but a bit cheaper & still use ACB's & not loose or caged bearings. They're about £25 & last for years. Otherwise, look out for some of the Cane Creek ones, which can be found at not silly prices.
