Hello peoples!
will be removing the massive electric sunroof assembly from my rover soon as its pointless, and heavy (and at the top of the car too so not the best place for weight in a track-biased build!)
was just wondering the options as far as a blank goes...
rivet a plate? perspex and some windscreen sealant? weld it up?
obviously I know those are all options, any pro's and cons though?
oh and option 4 I thought of tack welding a couple of braces under the apeture, then using the original glass sunroof (detached from the mechanisms etc) and rubber seal plonked down with a bit of sealant, as I know its a perfect, leak free fit...
any advice welcome!
mike.

Should have said he has inserted a full roll cage into it as well.... I had the sunroof removed in mine , filled with a hand made panel , it was bonkers expensive , if its just a track rat it doesnt matter what it looks like does it?

or if you want it to look really good, get a bead rolled stepped edge put on it, then rivet it on with the panel fitted from the inside using countersunk rivets so it sits flush

^^Yep, that would look really good. I would've done that except my sunroof was an aftermarket one and once removed left an edge on the roof that looked like the hole had been gnawed out by an angry badger with blunt false teeth

thanks guys, think riveted ally is the way foward! the car is still my daily at the mo, would be a bit worried someone could just peel off that perspex and get in, imagine its pretty wobbly and noisy too!!! not that its the lap of luxury anymore will be interested to see how muhc weight i can lose!

depending on your roof gutter arangements sometimes its easier to weld in a whole roof panel.

Be careful with welding. If its close to the edge you can send heat into the windscreen and it cracks. Ask me how I know

The best result is to cut a full roof out of a donor car it would be very hard ( lots of filling and flatting ) to get it nice after paint any other way .. leave the last inch and cut the rest out . Weld your new roof in complete . Bit of filling and paint for protection then check the roof ? Or paint

id have to agree with the above. Complete roofskin is a lot easier than trying to patch in new metal and fill/ sdand smooth and once done will look a lot neater and retain its strength that can be lost with a sunroof removed and a plate and a few rivets in its place

cheers guys trying to see if they did a rover 200 series without a sunroof, if not, bit of sheet will weld in nicely! looks arent that important to be honest, the car is black so would probably just satin black the entire roof...

I went for what you've listed as Option 4, but my sunroof was metal to start with and weighed virtually nothing once it was unbolted from the slider mechanism & motor (which weighed a ton!) - I used some simple brackets to bolt it back in using the existing bolt holes. Hard to say how well this would work with a glass one tho - probably best to go for BiAS' technique
