Yepp... My Saab... because I need to get a Porscheeee ;D
After about £1595
I bought the car when I was relocated at work and needed something to take the miles off my mini. I bought this in August with 200,000 miles on the clock and have since put about 20,000 trouble free miles on it. My girlfriend has just passed her test and bought a car so I’m now looking to downsize to something with half as many seats! (mid life crisis). Obviously it’s a convertible but it also has air conditioning, for when you don’t want the roof down.
Facts & Figures:
- Engine: 2.0 injection, transverse inline 4, four valves per cylinder, DOHC
- Transmission: Five speed manual, front wheel drive
- Steering: Rack-and-pinion power assisted
- Braking system: Servo assisted front & rear disc brakes
- Power output: 154bhp (114.8kW) at 5500RPM
- Torque: 162 lb.ft (219Nm) at 3600RPM
- Top speed: 130MPH
- Average mpg: 30mpg
- Seating capacity: 4 (four inertial reel seatbelts)
- Length: 4.62 meters (182.2 inches)
- Width: 1.71 meters (67.4 inches)
- Weight: 1830kg (4034lb)
Engine (T5, Red)
Engine has always run perfectly and always pulled well whilst being quiet. Definitely doesn’t show its miles. Doesn’t seem to suffer from turbo lag and I never had any need to thrash it. Very comfortable on the motorway and feels as though it's not being troubled at all. It has been dealer serviced and stamped up until 2007, the previous owner had it serviced at a Saab specialist (no stamps) and I’ve had it serviced by a Saab specialist in Huddersfield just after I got it. Always starts first time and all I’ve had to do is change the idle air intake valve which has improved the car’s idle revs, has also had a full oil flush through a few months ago. Before I got the car it had a new exhaust system from the cat back, including the cat.
Gearbox
No problem at all with the gears, selects all gears with no problems and isn't noisy. I haven’t changed the gearbox oil whilst I’ve had it just because there’s been no difficulty, even in the recent freezing temperatures where I’ve had problems with other cars.
Brakes
Disks all round, I haven’t had to change the pads whilst I had it and they've got plenty left. Disks look to be a fairly recent addition, either that or just well looked after. Recorded good numbers at the last MOT, hand brake has recently been adjusted and works fine.
Steering & suspension
Steering is tight, I haven’t noticed any play and it doesn't wander on the motorway, no issues with the power steering either, nice and light, quiet. Suspension is completely standard and rides well.
Electrics
All the electrics work as they should bar the headlamp wipers and radio, radio needs coding apparently, just says “radio locked” I haven’t used it as I’ve had my own head unit in there instead. The car will be supplied with the SAAB radio I have, aswell as the kit I installed to supply an after market head unit. I’ve had the SID unit refurbished, these are prone to fail and mine was on the way out, it’s now got a guarantee longer than the life of the car! This car doesn’t have heated seats but I’ve been told all the wiring is in the seats ready to convert. Heater gets hot quickly and the air con is nice and cold in the summer. Has electric windows all round with a function to raise or lower all 4 windows at the same time. Heated rear window has no breaks and the heated mirrors work. Also has an alarm and immobiliser as well as remote central locking. The roof is fully electric and works without fault; I’ve recently had the hydraulic fluid topped up.
Body
The body work on this car is very good considering its mileage. It’s got about 3 stone chips on the bonnet, centred around the bonnet badge. The bumpers do have some marks, they’re hardly noticeable. The boot lid has some marks to the top, as though it’s been used for storing things on, they’re not deep so will probably reduce with polish. Down the sides there’s one mark, on the driver’s door, looks like a car park mark, no other dents to the sides at all, it’s in very good condition. The roof most importantly is immaculate, has one fine mark on the whole thing, looks nearly new, no rips or tears and benefits from a glass, heated, rear window. Wheels are in good condition, not perfect with some kerbing but all four tyres are nearly new Pirellis.
Underneath is very clean and solid, hasn't had any welding done to the floor, I had a look at the last MOT, again, doesn’t show its mileage.
I have changed the orange side repeaters to smoked ones, these are the same item as fitted to the newer 9-3s and makes the car look a bit younger.
Interior
Interior is very clean, cream leather and a wood effect dash, there's damage to the rear of the driver's seat, a tear to the pocket (see photo) and top of rear glovebox lid but nowhere else, rear seats look to have been hardly used with only one mark on the back rest. The same goes of the boot, clean and tidy with the Saab warning triangle and most of the toolkit still there. Headlining is clean and doesn't have any damage, doesn’t obviously look like a cabrio from inside, one of the reasons I bought it.
Other stuff?
Car features an alarm and immobiliser with remote central locking which both work and have been "tested" by my girlfriend on numerous occasions! Is taxed until the end of October and MOT’d until September.
Overall then, a more than capable mile destroyer, a very reliable daily driver for anyone who wants something comfortable and quiet to get them around. 2nd hard parts are quiet easy to get through the owner's club and the fact there are always 9-3's being broken on eBay, many parts for these Saabs also feature on similar age Vauxhalls, mainly the Vectra B. Would look even better with a set of private number plates, a car which is ageing very well.
Also has driver, passenger and side airbags.
