Hi all,
The Sierra is pretty much dead and so I am going of to look at a turbo diesel Peugoet. The car is a 1995 PEUGEOT 405 1.9 GTXD Turbo 4dr [SR] Diesel Saloon with 150K on the clock.
Now I have never owned a diesel car before and so Know nothing about them or what to listen/look out for on them. Can anyone please give me any advice?
Also, does anyone know of anything in particular to watch out for on these cars in general?
Cheers folks,
Smiler.

I don't know much, and nothing about turbo diesels but check for head gasket failure. The high compression often blows out into the water jacket and pushes the coolant out (gases up the cooling system).

i had a 1.9 petrol one, which was ok. the boot leaked though, causing a huge pool in the rear footwells. it was like a tsunami when braking after heavy rain. couple of holes drilled in the floor sorted it out. ;D

Ive owned 3 TDs ( got one now) and driven more diesel powered motors than i care to remember. The bottom line is that a well maintained diesel will go on forever, a badly maintained one will cost you a fortune! The Peugeot diesel is generally a goodun. As pointed out the headgaskets can go and, on these engines, ive heard of cylinder head faliure. If you do get it, make it a priority to do a good service on the engine, you will feel the benefits. You are looking at very good economy, it will pull tree stumps out of the ground and the performance wont necessarily be that much worse than its petrol brother. Look out for excessive smoke ( could be the pump which can be expensive to replace) and make sure the engine gets up to working temperature, thats a must. Turbos, generally don't go wrong and a reluctance to start can indicate that the glow plugs are due for a change, not too expensive or difficult to do. The beauty with the diesel is that its quite a basic lump compared to petrol engines, no electrics as such to worry about and they tend not to be as fragile, cane the backside out of a diesel all day everyday and it will keep going. Enjoy.

150k is just about run in then.....
As long as it doesn't smoke a bastid, get hot (or not get hot enough!), make funny noises or drive like a bus then buy it.

Thanks, I just have! The mileage is actualy 158K, it had a new canbelt at 155K so that's sorted. Been stood a while but started from cold within about two rotations of the crank and settled to a smooth (for a diesel) idle. Performs faultlessly. As for the rest of the car, it's white and needs a bloody good clean! Interior is in fantastic condition with no visible wear on the drivers seat! Haven't try'd the electric sunroof yet as the seal is a bit mouldy but there is no damp inside or in the boot. The aircon needs recharging but the windows all work. Bad point: The ABS light comes on intermittently and when the side lights are on it makes all the instrument lights flash brighter and the brake lights flicker. Also occaisionaly makes a relay click a little. The battery is dud aswell. MOT till mid october and no Tax. The cost? £400! Thanks everyone for the help. Regards, Smiler.

Sounds like a good buy. I've had a couple of 405's and used to work in a peugeot specialists so i can vouch for em being good cars. That sunroof might be siezed, the cables are renowned for rusting, the easiest fix is to fit a s/h sunroof. The whole thing comes out in a huge cassette and you can change one in a couple of hours. If theres any negative camber on the rear wheels then the radius arm bearings are shot. Thats not a nice job and the easiest way around it is to once again get a good s/h axle and swop it over. The head gasket really is the weak point on these engines, especialy if they don't get regular coolant changes. As long as it comes up to running temp (about 90-100, they do run quite hot) doesnt overheat and the fans come in ok you shouldnt have too many problems. Oh yeah, at 150,000 if it hasnt had a gearbox already it will need one very soon. They have a tendancy to blow diffs up on a regular basis.

If you change the gear oil and go easy with it you'll probably be ok. Tbh at 150k its probably on it second box already, i'll be very surprised if it isnt.

Thanks for that link, I'll take a look. I've fitted the battery from the old VW Camper and it seems happy with it. Bought oil and filter, air filter and a new thermostat as I think it might be a bit slow to warm up. Also has some nice new wiper blades. Just needs a good T-cut and polish and some hub caps (or alloys). Lovely old smoker!
