I'd also look at the S Type R for that money.

I'm always interested by people claiming like 30 MPG on these, my dad says same on his 4.0 Sovereigns (he's had 2, both straight six).
However my experiance with larger modern barges suggests otherwise.
I had two Lexus LS400 which are a broadly similar car to the Jag. I got 21.4 running average out of the Mk3 and 24.6 mpg out of the Mk4 (a difference I put down to the 5 speed autobox etc. in the later version) In the Mk3 the best I got was 23.3 and the worst was 19.5
That's in mixed use. If you do a lot of city use you will get less, if you do a lot of motorway cruising and you don't get jammed up all the time then you will probably get better that.
Even my V6 Omega automatic only managed 24.2 MPG average
So go into it expecting to get 22-24 MPG and if you get more its a bonus.
I find 30 really hard to believe.
Also you can get an S Type R relatively cheap now but do remember thats a car which is specifically excluded from 99% of after market and extended warranty programmes which should tell you something...
Awesome cars. But buyer beware.
Also I disagee about toys. You don't buy a big modern luxobarge and not have the toys. Also you don't buy a big modern luxo barge and not have the V8...
One reason the Mk3 Lexus was a disappointment was the Mk4 was such a toy box in comparison

XJR Or Massive Merc or BM as they have V12 options

A well-sorted S Type R will be brutally fast (my father had one, which I then owned). 3.0V6 aluminium bodied XJ goes better than you might think, or a non-charged V8 S type is a nice thing too in SE spec. I've just got a V6 AWD X Type, but that's probably a bit small for what you're after.

Speaking of mileage in Jags, the older they are the worse they are. 20mpg from any of the old Series 1 - 3 is doing well, and from the 4litre XJ40 I used to see 27 - 29mpg regularly.
Usual thinking is if you don't get a supercharger equipped car you have to have a V12! So my buy would be the XJR.

Rich

If you decide a very tasty, reasonably priced S-Class 3.0 is your bag then drop me a pm Agreed on AK's fuel consumption figures. You aren't likely to see 30-odd to the gallon unless you drive the entire length of the M6 at 3.00 on a Wednesday morning doing 56mph on the cruise control. It's what you get for having a nice car though I suppose, there are more economical motors out there but these Jags are really nice places to be.

I'm another who'd go for the S-Type R.
The novelty of big jags quickly wears off when you can't park it anywhere

You suck at parking then. I park a sodding great Cadillac Fleetwood easy enough, its a good 2 foot longer and about a foot wider than a Jag

Seeing as this is RETRO RIDES and not Pistonheads, I can only suggest something older. An S1 XJ6 is the best looking Jag behind the E Type for me. Your dilemma isn't for this board.....;-)

Didn't realise there was a new moderator in town. The Jags he posted links to could easily be classed as 'retro' or even (dare I say it) 'future classic' as they're based on an age old design and definately something different from the norm. Seeing as this RETRO-RIDES not PISTONHEADS your nitpicking isn't for this board.

my XJ40 did about 22mpg around town and would do nearly 40 on the motorway, but only if you stuck at 55 to 60mph, 35mpg average at 70 was easy on a 100 mile trip, trick is to let them get locked into top gear and try to keep them there without picking up to much speed, traffic or the need to hurry kills the mpg.
