I am in need of a winter car as I really don't want to have to use my lovely fresh mk1 Fiesta through the winter and watch it deteriorate. Through word of mouth I have heard about a Metro that is going to be scrapped as its owners moved abroad. However this was 2 years ago and it has been sat on concrete outside on a farm very close to me since then. Also apparently approximatly a month ago its rear screen was broken but I have no idea how. It is red and C reg, but I have no idea what it is like structually or trim wise. Now I am pretty handy at getting a car back from the brink on the cheap. When I picked up my Fiesta it was about a week away from the scrappy and looking very sorry for itself. I got it decent with some professional bodging and kept it going before I restored it. So back to the point, what should I look out for on this Metro and at what point should I just leave it? Bearing in mind that I will be needing a cheap to buy, run and insure (19 years old) run around by Novemeber that is preferably local. Also I don't want some modern heap. Keeping it retro. And now for your troubles is some Metro based goodness to feast your eyes upon:

fun cars, lots of cheap tuning options but also like minis they rust a lot. Insurance should be bargainous

My thinking is that I probably will go for it. I know a guy with a transporter who owes me a favour so I should be able to get it home, thenI'm pretty handy with a welder and not too bad on the mechanical side from all I have learnt from my Fiesta (along with my dad having had a Mini as his first car back in the mists of time). Just looking for something to throw together for minimum outlay to get me through to next March or April. And if I can save a Metro in the process then that'll be great, not too many early ones around any more.

I think there is a better than even chance I should be able to pick it up for less than ÂŁ100. I got my Fiesta for free originally. Best thing I own, by quite some margin. While I think about it, does anyone know if there anre any metro alloys with tyres for sale cheap anywhere incase I do get it as I expect after 2 years the tyres will be flat and shagged. Doubt they will even pump up.

If it's a runner and the fabled Hydragas suspension hasn't leaked (easy to spot, it'll be sat down on one side if it's leaking) it's worth saving if it's not too rusty. Engine-wise it's an A-Series so check for blue smoke when it's started from cold or when revved after being left idling (valve stem seals usually, not a big job) and for any horrible knocking noises from the crank. If it's reasonably quiet it's probably OK. Gearboxes are weak (more so on 1275cc version), check synchros on all and check it doesn't jump out of gear.
998cc will be cheaper to insure than a 1275 for someone of your tender years.....it's no biggie though, as the 998's probably the better engine (revvier and less prone to crank wear)...plus they'll do almost 50mpg on a run if you take it gently.
Worth a punt if there's not too much work involved getting it back on the road.

Well if its less than ÂŁ100, and isnt going to cost a fortune to collect it, then it might be worth saving. Just make sure its not a rot box. Then if its not viable to do up, you can strip it and weigh it in (and maybe make a profit?)

I though these early ones were nearly extinct? That has to give it that novelty value. I like how you plan for winter in July. I plan for winter about January time .

Early Metro for less than ÂŁ100 has got to be worth a punt I would have thought, as Akku said they're virtually extinct now.

Ive got a Metro project, panels can be abit of a pain to source but plenty of them getting broken up on eBay, and insurance should be a deal as on a C and red it stands a chance of being around the 1.0L mark, sounds very much like the clubman..
So my answer is yes save it, I'm in the process of saving one. (more to come when room permits)

subframe mounts can be difficult 2 repair if theyve dissolved!
handle realy well and they're easy 2 fix mechanical wise, just very prone 2 the old tinworm, but if ur happy 2 weld, its probabaly savable!

I have my Fiesta which is my damn near pristine car. Really I am just looking at something to run through the winter so I don't mind just having a go at awkward bits of welding this time round. If it doesn't work then I will just grind it off and start again. I'm just looking for a run around rather than a show car this time. Well I will be seeing the person who put me onto it tomorrow so I will see if I can have a look at it either tomorrow evening or at the begining of next week.

Just got this text: I have looked on the farm scrap heap and the car is to far gone for repair there is not much left of it sorry
I think I will still have a look at it. It may just he dirty and missing it's rear screen. She knows the square route of sod all about cars so it would still be worth a trip down for a gander. If not then the search will just have to continue, but a metro does seem a good way to go.

If it is too far gone, see if the farmer will let you take off any useable bits (already good to have spares)

They do seem to rust - but in totally random places ... ? I don't know what that's a sign of, but mine has a totally solid floor and everything else, and the roof is shot?? Has it spent it's life upside down? If you look on Metropower forum, there are some that don't have any rust, so it's really down to care, as with any car.

I have heard today that it has one better than knackered tyres and actually has no wheels at all. So a wanted add has gone up. I'm just a little worried now incase it is missing other vital Parts and becomes uneconomical to repair.

Went and saw it today and unfortunately it was possibly the rustiest car on earth. I'm sure the back was only held onto the front by the head lining. The interior was ruined and engine looked dead and it had no wheels. So maybe not. Still looking for a dirt cheap run around for te winter in Devon though.
