Picture the scene. A little garage in a little village somewhere in the middle of nowhere, about ten years ago. The phone rings. Mechanic: Hello, Blunket and Wonder autos. Punter: Hello my good man, I wonder if you can help me. My Escort has just failed its MOT on excess corrosion of the suspension top mount thingamies and big frank at the MOT centre said you might be able to fix it up for me. Mechanic: Yeah, no worries chief, drop it in friday morning and we'll have it sorted for you. Punter: Splendid. Will you be cutting out all the rust and welding in fresh metal, thus preserving the structural integrity of the vehicle and ensuring its roadworthyness for future generations? Mechanic: No boss. We'll just snot an old bit of plate over it and make a nice rust sandwich so that in a few years time some mug has to cut it all out again and curse our name to hell while burning himself to curse word and whining like a tart over the internet about backstreet garages and cowboy rust repair techniques. Punter: Excellent, i'll see you about ten then. By the way, whats an internet? Mechanic: I havent a clue guv'nor.

My brother's Mk1 had 5 top plates on it. Even then it lowered itself one day. If I remember right it was the day AFTER the MOT and the bloke had said to him "nah, it's nothing to worry about on these old 'uns, they are all braced up on the inside." Next day brrrrm, brrrrm, crunching noise like digestive bisuits being crushed, kerchong, inch lower on one side...

Cheers autofive. I've already got top plates though. I just wasnt banking on the main strut support underneath being so bad though. At least i've got a good supply of 3mm plate kicking about ;D

Hehe, that reminds me of digging fistfulls of wag and paper out of the sills of the Merc. I was wondering what kind of shoddy DIYer would do such a thing until I dug out a load of blank garage receipts from inside the sill!!! Shocking stuff.
And yes, I did want to firebomb their shonky establishment.

reminds me off my makes cavvy. it had so many repairs to the inner wing, plates on top of plates like 5 mots in a row. towards the end they clearly didnt care anymore, the last plate was just stuck on with silicon filler and a big slap of hammerite on top. cowboys! i fixed it good and proper though..

My Beetle had the entire body held onto the chassis with silicone sealant, all of differing age. It seems every year, as the heater channels rotted from the back forwards, little old lady owner took it to the same garage for the MoT and they just spooged in another inch or so of silicone, undersealed on top, a years ticket. One hot day, over a humpback bridge, it would all have been revealed

You could be correct Or maybe it was like this:
Picture the scene. A little garage in a little village somewhere in the middle of nowhere, about ten years ago. The phone rings.
Mechanic: Hello, Blunket and Wonder autos.
Punter: Hello my good man, I wonder if you can help me. My Escort has just failed its MOT on excess corrosion of the suspension top mount thingamies and big frank at the MOT centre said you might be able to fix it up for me.
Mechanic: Yeah, no worries chief, drop it in friday morning and we'll have it sorted for you.
Punter: Splendid. Will you be cutting out all the rust and welding in fresh metal, thus preserving the structural integrity of the vehicle and ensuring its roadworthyness for future generations and charging a fiver ?
Mechanic: No boss, It'll cost a tenner. Or we can just snot an old bit of plate over it and make a nice rust sandwich so that in a few years time some mug has to cut it all out again and curse our name to hell while burning himself to b*gg*ry and whining like a tart over the internet about backstreet garages and cowboy rust repair techniques. But It'll only cost a fiver!
Punter: Excellent, i'll see you about ten then. By the way, whats an internet?
Mechanic: I havent a clue guv'nor. [/quote]

More feelings of guilt and embarrasment Ho-hum No need dear boy, i knew what i was getting into when i bought it and you try and find a 30 year old ford that aint rotten as a pear. Heres a few pics of what i did tonight. Nastiness all cut out. Plate cut to size. Welded in. Christ on a bike it fits ;D You can see here how distorted the old top mounts were. The new section is perfectly flush with the top of the leg. Just got to replace the other half of it now. I dunno why my pics are coming out small like that. Think i might have got too much grinding dust in my phone ;D

Class thread It's probably been mentioned a million times on here before but has anyone seen the sliver AA car maintenance book from days or yore? Step by step instructions on Blue Peter chassis repairs that would make your toes curl ... and if anyone has a copy of that book they want to let go, please let me know as I'm after buying a copy

aaaaaaaaaaaaah i think I might have that AA book at my mum's house - was it a wide format, dull silver cover? It used to be my bible when i stayed at my grans, probably aged 6 or 7, full of positively dangerous 'make-do repairs' and exceptionally stingy money-saving tips like coasting downhill

Straight on the paint mind you, no masking tape, and such a nice flat bonnet on a beetle too It's so anti-pc it makes me cry!!
