I'm doing a little bit of work on my freinds mini 30, shes going away for the weekend and letting me borrow the car/sort a few niggles out. Main one being when the car is idling, the revs are very erratic, flicking between 500-1000 rpm, then eventually stalling. This doesnt go away unless you pull the choke quite far out, meaning shes got to drive everywhere on pretty much full choke.
I'm thinking check the dash pot oil, and replace the air filter, any of you guys know what else it could be?

Air leak somewhere.

It's running very lean by the sound of it. Could be an air leak, but could also be a partially blocked main jet or incorrect float level on a SU.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

:(Yep sounds like fuelling rather than ignition, check fuel pump, check fuel filter if it's fitted with one, then rebuild the SU carb if it's still not right

I would go for a vacuum leak first. Squirting carb cleaner near the joins (manifold, vacuum advance) and spindles will hint at this issue (some very carefully pour water slowly around the joins, but I don't have the balls to do that (hello hydrolock...?)).
I would also say fuelling. Lift the lifter on the back by an 1/8" and see what happens to the rev. They should rise slightly, and then tail off slowly. If the revs race up, it is too rich, and if the car tries to stall, it is too lean. IME you tend to find more lean running SUs than rich ones.
It may be a knackered dizzy, but a timing gun would show this. But this sounds much more like a fuelling issue.
