Hey guys,
I have just changed the timing belt on SWMBO car. Only a little 1.0l Ax, nothing serious.
new water pump on, new tensioner, all timed up, turned over twice by hand to check the pistons and valves wernt making love.
before i put anything back on i wanted to start it to see if it was ok, and it didnt start, cranked fine with no horrible noises etc.
the only sensor i unplugged was one going to the ECU. Battery was disconnected.
checked the spark and there is none...
Could the timing be out, not allowing a spark to be generated...
Help please.

what type of ignition does it have? generally on most modern FI engines with coilpacks, the timing is done off the crank pulley with a crank position sensor, so the belt being off wont effect it actually firing- itll just be slightly mistimed. or is it early enough to still have a dizzy of sorts that controls timing? on most cars, even if the timing is one tooth out, theyll usually try to start and just pop and fart, or even start and run- but like its heavily advanced/retarded. we once did the belt on my mates passat on the road outside his house in the dark getting progressively more drunk as we did so, and got it one tooth out. was gutless til about 3000rpm then took off like a scalded cat as the ignition advance/retard came in id say if its a later coilpack ignition, chances are youve nocked/damaged/disloged the CPS when changing the belt? they tend to suffer from bad wiring due to being soaked in oil/water/dirt, so it doesnt take much to damage them. if its an earlier style of FI that still has a dizzy, it depends where the dizzy is driven from. if its cam briven like most, it will be out along with the valve timing (providing you have actually got the belt on wrong).

if this does have a tdc sensor it'll be on the flywheel not crank pulley, top front face of the bellhousing next to the block.

its a coilpack - year is 97 is the tdc sensor near the hole you have to put the pin in for locking the flywheel.
and i was testing the spark on a bare metal heat shield, would this be fine? or would i need to go to something better?

Yes the TDC sensor is where you say it is. Why not remove the plug and refit.
Another place to check is the ECU plug, remove this and look for bent pins, its quite easy to bend a pin when refitting the plug.

I reckon it will be down to the ECU plug. Give it a clean and lube, in addition to ensuring that that pins are straight and that the securing clip is not broken (easy to do with a lack of care).

Have you disturbed the cut off switch? It'll be mounted by the scuttle panel and have a red or black rubber boot over it

My citroen ax n-reg had no spark. After trying everything in the world, I pressed the fuel stop button above front right hand suspension and bang, it was fine again. If I'd read this answer could have saved two day's work!

I'm having the same with my MGZS, cam belt snapped so Ive cured it with a new head belt gaskets etc, pretty sure alls well mechanically. engine turns but no hint of trying to start. When the key is turned to the 1st position theres a faint noise clicking a bit like a petrol pump in the engine bay, Ant ideas?
