So I'm slogging a long painting this Vauxhall again and thinking maybe a bit of something funky would be in order. This may or may not get done. However in the interests of keeping my ennthusiasm going for the project in the frustrating phase howabout some ideas "brainstorming" for the car. basically, this is the car: or and these are the wheels its going to be running (on the blue car) and the car is Vauxhall Rio Verde green. There will be no vinyl roof. suggestions for coolness from the forum?

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

How about the bright metalic green that Vaux used for the viva. I will be getting rid of mine soon as I want a matt look but if I wasn't I would keep the colour - I have been getting told several times now from non car buffs that it's a funky colour. Or am I mistaking kitsch funkyness for coolness?

AlistairK, how about doing the roof either metallic silver or metalflake silver? with a little subtle striping here and there?

colour is sorted, I have the paint and most of it is on the car now.
I'm thinking of just what can make the car look that bit more interesting. The thing is that the FD is thematically similar to (a) generic late 60s yanks and (b) the Mk3 Cortina, but things which work well on either of them seem not to work on the FD. In fact I'm having difficulty thinking of an FD I've seen with a custom paint job or something which actually "worked" (Red Victor 2 is an exception, but thats a whole different kettle of caviar)
SS Stripes, shelby stripes, nah, viper stripes, erm no, monte carlo stripes? I don't think so. Flames? no, the car is too stock looking otherwise to carry that off. As its a 4 door most of the racing themed ideas would look wrong. Also the old "logo on the front doors" won't work as the doors are too short in comparison to the length of the car.
I did think about a satin black bonnet, possibly with a white roundel with a "race number", but I've gone off the idea.

AlistairK, how about doing the roof either metallic silver or metalflake silver? with a little subtle striping here and there? If I'd kept the chrome trim that finishes off the vinyl roof I could easily have done the roof another colour. I'm not sure 2 tones like that work on the FD shap as the roof is rather rounded when the vinyl is removed, flows into the rear quarters nicely and a colour break would look odd. I think its too new to suit traditional striping and too old for the modern revival pinstriping. The other thing is all the panels curve all over the place (one reason its a sod to rub down!) and thers that hard swage line down the centres of the sides. I've seen one two-toned with the colour break there but it really didn't work. I had thought of adding a "tribal" motif down the sides above the swage line in a lighter green, possibly pinstripe edged in a contrastic colour like gold or orange, but I think that might be far too modern a look to go with my chosen wheels/stance/etc. Bags etc are out due to buget before any other consideration.

I think subtle things will enhance this car. I reckon black those wheels up and polish the faces, which will look spot on IMO Then it needs slamming on the floor, like really low! That would be all it needs to be a complete neck twizzling head turner. Other things to do would be 'red' out the rear lenses, maybe get some clears for the front? Or relocate them?

scallops are a bit 50s/early 60s really. I'd thought about detailing the wheels. Would look good I reckon. I have one, and one only, US export rear light lens which is all red! If I ever find another I have a pukka pair there... The wheels width and offset means it won't go low without rubbing stuff. Plus I need to clear wicked speed humps... The camber gets all messed up if you drop it too much anyways, and it makes the steering even heavier. But it could stand to be a little lower, especially at the front I think

MWF and skocans ideas along with streets wheels and lenses tips sound like the win to me. subtle trim tweaks after that. that should be plenty to get juices flowing, i know mine are now!

MWF - nice work Skocan - I like your thinking. I'd been looking at the stripe kit that came on the AMCs in the early 70s but couldn't make it work on the FD shape. Clear lenses may work well, oddly enough I like the look of the orange against the gree though! And you can (could) get clear lenses easy enoughas there was a Bedford truck which used the exact same lens as a sidelight but in clear. Wagoneer, still not sure how well that idea would play out in the curved panels around the rear pillar. I'm also not sure whether to black out the rear light panel either. this is the rear view of the car (oddly enough an eBay find of a car I used to own!) this is probably a better shot but has non-standrad trim in place so do I do the recess between the rear lights in black or body colour? Body colour is stock on a Victor but the Ventora has it in black...
