Probably not the ideal place to ask this question, but maybe someone will know, so here it is anyway. I have also asked over on mg-rover.org.
My mate at work has a 1997 Lotus Elise 1.8 (118bhp) and the engine is goosed (after 30,000 km!!!!).
The local rover dealer here in France has quoted €4000 (£2600) to replace the engine with a re-con one.
I have found a few places in the UK that can sell us a recon 1.8K for a Freelander, Rover 400 or MGF, including shipping to where we are, for at least £1000 less than this price.
Is there any reason why one of these units might not be suitable? one of the engine shops has told us that the block drillings for the engine mounts are different and the other 3 say they are the same. Also there is the question of 'coil pack vs. distributor' (ours has a dizzy). Can anyone shed any light?

If the engine is shafted, get it up to Scholar Engines in Suffolk; they do a 1.9 conversion that with a VHPD head can produce over 200bhp naturally aspirated. Also, they do the Landrover upgrade to the head gasket and main bearing ladder which will really make the unit bombproof...

My mate fitted the timing belt incorrectly and clacked a valve; not in itself very serious, but the Rover garage have opened up the engine and found a strange undulating wear on the liners halfway down, presumably caused by a severe overheating incident; plus some of the wiring behind the engine, and the plastic cover behined the timing belt are badly burned/melted. Lord knows how this all happened but my mate is pretty despondent having forked out 19,000 euros for the car only 6 weeks ago, and it was running champion until he decided to do the belt for safety's sake!
I don't think we're in the market for an upgrade, just a standard motor in good nick will do us very nicely. All the re-con units seem to come with the upgraded gasket and dowels so no worries there.

If it is only the 118 bhp version i cant see any reason why there should be a problem. Ive changed engines on elise's before and also on freelanders, mgf's etc and as far as i can remember there arent any differences in the engine itself. I think the elise has a different inlet and exhaust manifold but you wont get them with a recon unit and would have to use yours. Oh 1 thing you do have to change is the spark plug cover as it will say rover on it

Nice one TCS. On the elise do you take the engine out from above or do you lower it out?
I can see us carrying out the swap ourselves.

Engine and box out the bottom ftw. You have to remove the rear wishbones but they should come off ok. The other option is to remove the rear 'clam shell' panel and then you will have all the space in the world and it will come out the top, but either way the box has to come out aswell.

So sounds like all versions of the 1.8 non VVC is a runner and any issues can be resolved with swapping periferals across from the old unit.

"If the question is about what engine and box to put in an Elise, you should really only consider the MGF unit as a whole. The engines/boxes shipped to Lotus (for the standard car) were identical. If you are after an 'engine' only, pretty much any will do so long as you swap the peripheries over. Donor 'units' from other vehicles will have the wrong gearbox and harness and may include other items such as PAS pump and a/c units that are not used on the Elise."
