Hi there
In the last week - and mainly on warmer days I've noticed a suphur (rotten egg like) smell coming through the blower vents into my mercedes 230ce. Upon further investigation the smell was coming from the battery area and there was a fizzing noise coming from the battery - I shut the bonnet pretty promptly in fear of it exploding! Was just wondering if this just means my battery is goosed and its time to get a new one? Or could the problem be due to overcharging of the battery due to alternator or dodgy wiring issues? Advice would be much appreciated. Cheers, Rob.

More than likely a bad alternator regulator overcharging the battery. You'll need to get a voltmeter to confirm it. Anything over around 14.5v across the battery when the engine is running (and revved) is going to damage the battery.
You can replace the regulator and brushes as a unit on most bosch alternators (if you can find a replacement).
Replacing the alternator or just the regulator should bring the charging voltage down to around 13.5- 14v.
Charging the battery to the point of boiling won't have done it any favours, but you might get away with it.

the battery on our old disco boiled over after afew deep water excursions on an offroad play day. alternator was overcharging, idle was 15V but at 3000rpm was about 22v! instruments on the dash pod were going haywire/stereo cut out soon as you revved it up etc. fitted a new alternator and bought some acid from sbs (sheffield battery services) and topped up the cells in the excisting battery........ but then after a week it wouldnt start. had to put a battery in it too. cost about £140 in that week.

bve warned... the battery may explode if overcharged ;D ;D - I had one blow up on me in the old prairie - luckily just down the road from johnced's place, and he had an alty and battery for me to fit - and a hose to wash off the acid! - big dent in the bonnet, and one of the loudest bangs I've heard from my engine!
