Hi everybody, I have a problem with SWMBO's Golf, its a mk3 with the ADZ single point injected 1800cc lump. (CLI) The other day, the coil "poped" so I have bought a new one, and put it it, still no spark, and the oil light is flashing when cranking over, indicating a fault code perhaps? so two questions: 1. how does one reset the ecu, I have tried disconnecting the battery, and it appears to be doing the same. 2. how can I check that the hall sensor is sending a signal from the dizzy to the coil? I appear to have 12 volts at both terminals on the coil post hall sensor... Edit: No access to vagcom here, new zealand is a backwater as far as euro cars goes Edit: forgot the pic have a pic of my mini sitting low as payment ;D

coil popped? what does that mean?
at the dizzy you have 3 wires yes? one's live, one's an earth, the middle one's the signal.... do you have the live and earth with the ignition on? do you have some sort of simple test light? put one end on a battery live or an earth, back probe the middle wire with it plugged in as normal... as your cranking it over does your test light flash on and off?
i cant remember if the adz engine uses a "tci" ignition unit mounted near the ecu (like a mk2 golf gti digifant system does). if your dizzy checks out, id get another tci unit to try.......

If the injection systems are similar to others of the same era, I would be tempted to check out the Crank Sensor. Some of them can be adjusted (feeler gauges come in handy here), others just knacker up (In my old Jag it died, in the Focus it got chewed off). I shall see if I can gather more info on testing it. VAGCOM would make life easier I admit, but I am sure there are alternative methods.
I would test that if you have no spark as my first port of call. Did the car run with the old coil, or did it just die?

adz engines don't have crank sensors as such, its all run off the dizzy..... i'll look at the stuff at work tomorrow, can tell you if it has a tci unit and what to check.

i would say most likely that the hall sender on the dizzy is kaput, and this may have possibly killed the coil. you might even find the original coil was fine all along.

hi everyone, thanks for the replys, i yes, it has a 3 wire TCI / coil, fed from a hall sensor in the dizzy, I do appear to have voltage to the coil.
By "poped" i mean, the coil literally burst open (and got very, very hot)
I will try with a light to see if i am getting signal at the coil, its cranking to fast for my multimeter to be much use.

Hi everyone, I have replaced the hall sensor at the dizzy end, and the coil, I have live and earth to the coil, and the Dizzy is turing the injector on and off as it should be, but i still have no spark,
SO: I'm thinking it must be the electrickery at the coil end, or in between the coil and the dizzy?
any one got any ideas?

Do you have a test light? The third pin on the coil should be pulsing on and off - if you have a test light, connect one end to the + terminal on the battery and the other to the pins in the coil.
Not sure if these have a separate ignition amplifier on them, or have it built in the coil (or ecu) IIRC its probably in the coil if it's one of them square coils rather than the red bull can affairs. .
