Haha, I've never had the pleasure of working on French stuff no, and if it looks near enough impossible, then I'll leave it. However I'm not scared of electrics, and I've played with ECU controlled stuff a bit, and know the basics of what to expect to have to do.
I'll have a nose under the bonnet of a mates 2.1td 406, and another mates 2.0hdi 306 and see what it looks like, handy having both cars close by to look at, haha. Unfortunately the 306 is the 90bhp version, which I wouldn't want, but I'm guessing the wiring will be similar to the 110.

for a 2.1, expect about 10% more, over the same mods with a 1.9 mine's a 2.1, bosch pumped, (with a few cheeky mods ) and a turbo off a Frontera, I think a 2.8? If I start off with 150Bhp, I'd be chuffed!

Have you considered using a D5? Crazy power as standard as well as 60mpg powering a massive 4x4

D5 would be awesome, but they're not really scrap yard fodder yet, and the more I spend on the conversion, the less point there is in doing it. I'm doing this 100% for practicality sake, I don't really have any desire for a derv, I just have a need and desire for 40+mpg, and a big practical, retro car. This is also the same reason I want a bog standard engine.

make sure you document this conversion, could be fun rolling around in a something like a skyline with a derv in it

if you do go down the LDV box route, they were fitted to late sherpas and 400s and early convoys had them as run out before the tranny lump.
I know a local LDV breaker that put the boxes out at around £100 and theres a local specialist that when i worked for LDV main dealers we bought recons from him for less than the dealer discounted prices!!! last I checked £225 fully re conned with 2 yr guarantee!!

Have you considered using a TD from a 700 or 900? Already RWD, already Volvo. I don't know if there is much or any commonality between the 7/900 and the 200, but it might just make things like engine mounts easier.
Mind you, not sure if the 7/9 lumps were very fuel efficient!
Oh and another thought, what do you do about the fuel system? Putting petrol in a derv is supposedly a big no no, what's it like the other way round?

I did think about the Volvo lumps, but I'm under the impression they're not that good on fuel. Although I'm yet to find a figure to quantify it, so they may still be in the running if it turns out they're not that bad, after all, the pre hdi pug lumps don't seem that amazing on fuel either. Only thing is they're no where near as common as the pug engines, but then it would give me everything in one package.
As for the fuel system, I've heard of it being done many times, in fact I'm sure I've heard of a fair few mk1 caddys going from derv to petrol without issue.

It seems to me, as the 1.9 has already been used in RWD configuration, that getting the engine/box complete from an LDV Pilot, as suggested, would provide most of the parts needed to make that the easiest option. Obviously you'd want to transfer the parts over onto a 1.9 turbo engine though. This may be of interest: www.ldv-sherpa.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2481The gearbox in the Pilot is the R380, I'm not sure on the ratios though.

When i had a 51 plate 406 hdi (90) estate i drove it everywhere fully loaded for work, roof box on for the kids stuff and driven like the free fuel company car it was it could not get less than 40 mpg no matter how I tried. It was not the fastest car ever but if it is cheap and easy enough to use one of these don't rule them out because of being the 90. John.
