I've been trying to decide what I should use as regards fittings while I refurb the chassis on my S12. I could go to Mr Nissan and spend an absolute fortune or I could try and figure out whats what and go to a fixture specialists. I had hoped to smply get a box of different fittings but none seem to do a selection pack of metric fine.
Am I right to be looking for metric fine, high tensile bolts etc in m6 to m12 (spanner size 10mm to 19mm) ? Do they have be fine thread specifically ?

anything wrong with the ones that were fitted? i've found nissan nuts and bolts to be pretty high quaility compared to other cars i've owned. you'll be hard pressed to fine decent quaility nuts and bolts in a selection pack. but places to look could be kit car suppliers, like Car Builder Solutions. other then that, how about getting the nissan ones refurbed, zinc plated?

Yellow passivate plating kit is fairly cheap. Sort of an electro-plating technique used by OEMs for rust proofing fastners and brackets. cgi.ebay.co.uk/Yellow-Passivate-Plating-Kit-Rust-Resistant-Plating-/380105407271?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item58800c3b27 Alright, found a kit on ebay and perhaps £200 isn't as cheap as I was expecting... But... £200 squid and a fair bit of elbow grease isn't so much to pay compared with what it might cost for a complete fastners kit for the Nissan. This is the finish you get. Not as good as stainless. But like you say, it is very difficult to get stainless everything in the right sizes. Also very expensive and Stainless also isn't high tensile 8.8 so for some parts of the car 8.8 high tensile will be the only option.

Just in case it wasn't clear... you would clean and wire-wheel the original fastners and then re-plate them. They'll be like new if they've not actually changed size from corrosion or use.

nissan don't use metric fine. they're use metric extra fine, and fasteners in this thread are VERY expensive- if you can get them at all. youre best off sticking with the stock stuff, and getting it cleaned and plated.
