Well I'd not seen this thread, but have voted Imp
i had a 1275cc mini cooper clone, and took that on a 1600-mile tour round scotland couple of years ago. It was fun.
But since getting my Imp i'd not go back to a mini, the mini was faster in a straight line, but my imp trounces it through corners, just handles nicer & much more fun.
Also since getting it in january i've covered 6,000 miles, alot on motorway in my Imp, and she is a MUCH more comfortable car.
i paid about the same for tehm each, but teh imp is in better condition (not as nicer colour though, my mini was violet!)
Both give me around 40mpg, though the imp is back-firing abit atm... ;D
reliability is relative to maintainance, i meantain them both high, soo both were reliable :-)
However my mini was a 1995, soo had afew more luxuries like a stereo, which the imp is getting but i've had to alternator convert first.
Depends what you want from teh car, i find the imp has been a nicer owning experiamce, and i'd wanted the mini more.
xXx

tbh mate the imp club is proabibly one of the best clubs there is (imho) and the forum is very helpful as well as the menbers if you are having a problem that you cant fis someone will more then likely drive to you to give you a hand for instance I go over to bens (moodindigo) place every now and then and give him a hand with his imp project and he does the same

I've always fancied getting both, an angle grinder, a welder, and making a twin engined minimp ;D
Unless that's been done already?

Someone local to me has offered me an old Triumph 1500 which I went to look at. While I was there I noticed a sorry looking imp with no front suspension which apparently belongs to his son. Apparently it was taken off the road after the front suspension broke (god knows how) and has been sitting there since. Anyway, I've told him that if he ever wants rid of it to let me know, so there is a fair chance I could get it for next to nothing. This thread is making me want it more and more!

1964 Hillman Imp 1976 Hillman Imp 1967 Hillman Imp (And a few projects dotted around the country)
Just cos something is good for you doesn't mean its good for everyone - for example Marmite does not make good Dog Food.

I'm another biased one on here, but I depends on what you want the car to be to you. I'd say a mini is easier to get bits for, particularly panels and tuning bits, but if you like to be hands on, an imp will almost certainly engage you more, the club also is one of the best. anyway here's some pics:

also had a bit more look into minis aswell, how hard is to convert from auto to manual Easiest way is to buy a complete rotten manual car (not hard to find ;D) as a donor and swap the front subframe across. I converted a manual to auto a few years ago when I was told I would need surgery on my left knee. Subframe swap took two of us an afternoon with the most faff being with matching up brake hydraulics of different eras. Then I was told my knee could be fixed with physio and swapped it all back. If you eant to build a decent Mini, autos are good body donors as they're often pampered posetions of little old ladies. Back on topic, only Imp I've driven was a stock one many years ago that I remember as being dog slow but great fun once it had eventually gathered way. As a teenager I had a neighbour withb a much played with Stiletto and that was one of the quickest cars in town at the time, regularly upsetting the Escort Mexico boys. Personally I'd have a Mini for the reasons already mentioned by others about parts availibility etc, plus I know them very well, but I certainly wouldn;t rule an Imp out. The last consideration when I buy a car is whether other people think it's cool or not. Buy what you find the most fun to drive and what you can best afford.

For the Imp - speedy spares in portslade is excellent value, i doubt you'd be able to fault them on price vs stuff for a mini.

don't get me wrong, I love Imps, just think minis are a better car to drive, unless you spend an awful lot making a fast Imp.
