Just bought a Mk3 Golf GTI. Now, the one think I noticed on the test drive was a "clicking" when reversing. I figured it'd be alright and bought it anyway as it was cheap. I did some Googlage and it turns out that the reverse idler gear tooth gets chipped on higher mileage cars (mines on 120k). Now, my question is really: Is this going to cause me problems? I'm not really wanting to pull the gearbox or anything drastic, so if it'll just click in reverse and continue to be functional and not deteriorate, I can just merrily drive the thing and be happy. If it IS going to cause trouble down the line, I'll have to have a think about what to do! What do you reckon?

Firstly - Why?
Also secondly - drive it till it blows up then buy a Mk2 lol.

They aren't bad cars! It's just old enough to get on my classic policy, and just new enough to be a usable, trouble-free (relatively) commuter car. This is me being sensible. ;D
Also, I didn't want anything that I'd end up spannering on. I've got two of them already!

reverse is normally noisy as the're straight cut gears.... you sure its not normal?
first thing id do is drop the gear oil out.... if theres any signs of metal in the oil id carry on using it but id start looking for a gearbox now before you need it! having a tooth or two missing is one thing, having the bits of metal swimming round in the gear oil wearing the rest of the box out is far more pressing. ive seen split gear box casings caused by bits of metal kicking about in the 'box.

It's definitely something more than normal reverse gear noise - I thought it might be a CV joint but I've read up about this clicking noise and apparently they do break teeth.
Just did a bit more reading, and if the magnet has picked up the broken bits then it's all good. If they're swilling round in the oil then there could be trouble ahead.
I have a feeling that it's been like this for a while, so with any luck the broken tooth is stuck to the magnet. Would be an idea to drop the oil though.
It has full service history and it seems to have been well looked after.

gearbox oil isnt really a service item on these. i don't think they have magnets on the drain plugs.... id drop the oil soon as you can tbh. if it doesnt look like freshly mixed black mettalic paint you can sleep easy that its not a gearbox related noise....

It's a common thing with them.
It'll probably be that the worst problem you'll have a long time down the line is it occasionaly popping out of reverse. It won't effect the forward gears though. Best changing the gearbox oil just to make sure there isn't and curse word flying round in there. The only cure for it is a replacment box.
The only Mk3 I've had that hasn't had a reverse noise is the 16v GTI I currently have which has 140k on the clock. I my brothers old 8v GTI had 60k on the clock and it was knackered! If you wanted to reverse you had to hold it in place otherwise it would just pop out.

Right, thanks guys. I'll change the gear oil as soon as. From reading on the internet, it does seem to be a really common fault on 020 gearboxes. MiniDan, I should have travelled further and bought yours! I'd have had a quieter reverse and 8 more valves! ;D

Noisy reverse is par for the course...my mk3 screamed in reverse for the 4 years I had it, never let me down though...don't be too concerned, but just be prepared for the snide comments off people who own new cars....

Usuall on these, i've changed the oil on a few now to fully synthetic to help the cruchy 1st to 2nd gear change when cold and uber noisey reverse. Change slow for the first few miles and they seem to last ok but abuse em cold and they are a box of spanners waiting to be let loose it seems.

Right, I'll price up some synthetic gear oil - 2 litres I think it takes. Is it worth putting an additive in? Molyslip or something. Thanks for all the advice, this tech section is going to be a big success I think.
