Am I right in assuming something is wrong if the voltage meter is showing in the white section rather than the green? What would cause this? I have had a squeaky fan belt on occasions, but rarely. Also, the water pump pulley is starting to get loose, I have had one go before, so know that it will need replacing soon anyway. Could a slightly slipping belt give the low voltage reading?

have you checked the charge rate at the battery rather than trusting the guage?
alt not charging?

Em... I tend to avoid anything electrical. Anyone who has seen my 'wiring'* attempts will testify to this. I presume I'd just need to put an electrical reader thingy onto the battery and hope the needle bounces to aroung 13ish? I do actually have a spare alternator if need be, but I'd like to rule out loose belt first. In fact, I'll just change that belt when I get a sec, got a spare one of those too. Also have a spare water pump. Might do a better job this time than I did on the side of the M4!

When charging, the battery voltage should be at around 14V (in the green section), so a constant reading of 12V would indicate something amiss.
Try tightening or changing the belt, and checking all main battery terminals including engine earth strap.
You may be able to get replacement brushes for the alternator so it may be saveable if it is at fault.

there will be a difference between charging at idle and charging at revs as well

Sorted this one? Was gonna suggest alt regulator if it uses the same high-quality iron block electricals as Skoda.

A slightly loose belt (occasional slippy squeel) won't help matters as it'll be slipping more than you can hear and realise. Start by tightening it up, taking battery readings with engine off, at idle and when giving it some revs and go from there... Where, numerically, does the white section of your gauge finish and the green begin?
