Or do you still need a custom subframe and all that jazz?
Since I know a mk1 golf can't accept a KR/ABF but it will take the 9a engine with much less fuss?

You'd need to chop up most of the front end of the car as far as I'm aware. The larger VW engines are a fair bit larger, and sit very slanted back, the opposite of the smaller stuff, causing a lot of clearance issues.
As far as I'm aware the biggest/most powerful you can stick strait in on standard mounting points is the 1.6 16v from the 6n2 GTI, or the more obvious G40 supercharged 1.3.

mk1 golf wise. if you start with a 1100/1300 engined one you will need to chop the engine mount off the o/s inner wing and a 1500/1600/1800 to weld where it should be. (other stuff needs changing too such as the steering rack etc) i know this from experience of creating a gti replica from a rotten 1500 gx 4 door and a tidy 1300 with a knackard engine. added some gti trim and wheel arch spats..... made a tidy profit on sale!!
as polos didnt come with the slanted back engine id be guessing custom work would be required......

aslong as the block has the holes for the o/s engine mount (just to the back of the timing belt tensioner) it'll fit. as far i know the kr/abf does have these holes but they're not used in mk3 golf applications, so you may have to tap the holes to get the rust out of the threads. well written guide i cant fault on mk1golf.org www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=39

None of the lent back VW engines will bolt strait into a mk2f polo.
