I want the water flow from the heater circuit to always flow back to the engine, whether the heater is on or not. The engine needs this as a design fault means cylinder 4 doesn't get adequate cooling. Ie I don't want to stop the flow back to the engine when the heater is off. I could just T off a permanent circuit for the heater but would prefer to have the heater work well in winter.
So, is there a source of cheap three way valves out there that deal with hot, pressurised water? Best I can come up with is 3 way central heating valves but these have 240V electric solonoid rather than manual lever & I think use a rubber bung to control flow rather than a chrome or stainless steel ball valve. They also cost about £50.
Other alternative is two 2 way valves and remembering to turn one off and one on. This is somewhat clunky though.
Any suggestions? many thanks

the ford KA might be worth a look, i think it's 4 port so flows through the valve to the heater when on, but bypasses when off and fluid still circulates via the return hose, control is electric, might be plain on/off but if you used it in conjunction with a flow valve and put a micro-switch to close the valve when you select cold it could do the job cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ford-Heater-solenoid-valve-/120740073495?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c1cab5017#ht_500wt_1156I've heard of people using them on other cars, but also a chap in the trade claimed they only lasted typically about 10yrs on a KA, but on the flip side not expensive either.

Danfoss HSV3 mid position valves for central heating are available ad the valve only without a solenoid. also the part that controls the water flow appears to be spring loaded metal plates. you can get them on ebay for less than £20 inc.postage.
just happens that I've got one to change on my central heating

That's brilliant, thanks guys. I was thinking central heating but couldn't find the 3 way for less than about £45 which is a lot of money to spend when it might not work as an idea.

Non return valves wouldn't do it, backflow isn't an issue and they don't provide the switch between circuits. I've got a central heating valve and I'll see how that goes. You're one of the Minor guys from the 'other' site aren't you?
I'm currently making a heater out of a Golf matrix and bits of aluminium rivetted together. Should be more effective than the old Minor/Mini one and will fit up in the bulbous bit behind the speedo freeing up the space where the old heater went. I need to update my 'Readers Rides' on here
