My neighbour has been having a slight problem with her P reg 1.1 fiat punto recently. It has always started first turn of the key up untill a couple of weeks ago. It can now take 2 or 3 attempts to get it going and this is much worse on a hot day or if the engine is already warm. Now she tells me that the car had not been serviced since 2008 So I thought that this is least contributing to the starting issues. So I drained the treacle out of the sump, then changed the HT leads and spark plugs as well as the airfilter and oil filter. It seems to have improved things but its still not quite right. So I now have a new fuel filter on order and have cleaned the single point injection doodah with carb cleaner. What else would people suggest or do you think I'm barking completly up the wrong tree? Any advice most appreciated

prob just a good old service like you doing thats all...
if still like that when fully serviced then think about looking at other things.. but even crankigg over a bit to get it going is nothing ...my mk3 cavalier is like that some times..
all the best

What are the symtoms when it's not starting? Is it turning over at a normal speed but just not firing?

These sort of problems demand an auto electrician with over 6 years of experience. LOL, very good. ;D ;D ;D

Turns over at normal speed and doesn't fire. You could crank away for 2 or 3 mins and nothing. But on the 3rd or 4th key turn it will fire up. You then have to massage the throttle to keep it going for a few seconds.
Oh whats an italian tune up?

Talking of diagnostics devices I have one of those laptop sync devices but it wont link up to anything built before 2002. Anyone know where to get one that will link up to older stuff thats jammed full of electronics

maybe it's the speed sensor?

An Italian tune-up is taking the car for a good thrash - get it properly hot all the way through and then wind it up to ~redline for a few minutes, maybe in 3rd so you don't break the speed limit.
TBH, given the need to use the throttle I'd be suspecting the fast idle device - be it solenoid, stepper motor or whatever. Does the idle vary when it's running and warm?

Would be worth checking the breather pipes and check that they are not blocked, especially if the car hasn't been serviced for so long. Being a P reg I guess it must have some sort of pcv system.
