Over the last 2 month my daily driver MK3 astra 1.4 has developed a rather annoying intermittent fault. It just cuts out,no spitting or farting, then you leave it for 5/10mins then off you go. I have changed the following fuel pump fuel filter fuel pump relay dizzy cap rotor arm coil amp module ICV (due to fault code reader)
used it all week no problem,Took it over to collect some cement etc today and it has just played up some thing chronic just put fault code reader on it and not recording any faults, now scratching head.

Is it theEcotec engine?
They've a habit of eating sensors. Look at the crank and cam sensors. They aren't expensive.

Have you changed the plug leads? My car never used to drive at all well in very light rain .... fixed it by changing the leads.

when its running its a smooth ride, revs freely,no kangaroo jump, lambada regulates lean and rich mixture,it just seems as if the fuel has stopped, but i can hear pump priming. HT leads were done not 6 months ago on last service.

Have you got an in-line fuel filter and have you removed the new (fuel) filter you fitted to see what it's like?

I know, it sounds exactly the same as what happed to my mates 1.6 8v astra. changed everything we could think of. changed the lambda sensor and it ran great

Try the rotor. Mine had a small burn-mark inside, where the spark had jumped over to the camaxle

fuel filter is the solid type steel canister,so unable to see if there is crud inside. rotor arm is good,i would expect it to be after only 200+ miles. i have ordered a new lambada, what is the best to use on it fitting wise (lubricant).

This sounds like a crankshaft position sensor fault.
When it/engine get hot it gets an excessively high resistance and stops creating its 2volt A/C (approx) signal so the ECU thinks the engine isnt turning so ignition and injector switching stops.
When the sensor/engine cools the sensor resistance drops and off you go again.
If its an 8 valve the sensor should be on engine block pointing at the toothed crank pulley.
It wouldnt hurt to clean the sensor and pulley as a build up of crud wont help either.
A good way to check if this is the problem is when it cuts out next spray the sensor with something cold like brake cleaner to see if it restarts...

many thanks for that bowling4soup,will check that out today.
Had car up in the air and the C14NZ engine has no crank sensor,so i think we can discount that theory.
Also have changed temp sensor,Map sensor, new diaphragm in fuel regulator, throttle position sensor, starting to run out of ideas.

It does have a sensor though - it's in the distributor, and subject to the same problems as the external ones.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

It does have a sensor though - it's in the distributor, and subject to the same problems as the external ones. so it could be down to the dizzy then, just looked in the haynes and it is not shown internally in the exploded view

OK if its an early mk3 and got a distibutor, then the sensor is inside (listed as a hall effect sensor).
As said these also go open circuit with engine heat.

thanks,i will try and locate another dizzy then, lambada has been changed but not tried it on a run yet,its been ticking over for the last hour with no problems.
I have found a company in Basildon that will test the dizzy for free (quite a rarity these days),so if that checks out ok,then that's another possibility crossed off.so nice little run out tomorrow.

we had a 1.4 8v that cut out randomly, fault traced to the ignition switch wiring! replaced that, and it was fine! was an odd one to diagnose tho, guess something to do with steering column movement...

Already done that one,new ignition switch, barrel (due to snapping the key) there isn't much i haven't changed on the car trying to solve this fault, Wouldn't normally bother,But it is a one owner from new with full service history and only 52k on the clock,Few little rust spots just starting to appear,Nothing major that can't be sorted.

Mine used to drive me mad. It would just cut out at traffic lights. Changed the cam sensor for a new one as the old paperclip trick told me to. Turned out it was the crank sensor on mine, as it was only finger tight. I'd bought another one anyway. RIP my Yellow Astra Sport
