Ive taken my W115 radiator in to a local place and theyve got back to me with a price of £180 to re-core it with a slightly thicker core. I'm no expert as ive never had a rad re-cored but £180 sounds like a lot when pattern rads are available for £20-£40 more. Am i barking up the wrong tree on this one, would it work out better to have one fabricated? Have a model rat for your troubles;

The rads in these cars are brass, so re-coring is going to be more expensive than more modern aluminium radiators, unfortunately!

Is the pattern rad for your car or from a more modern variant?
IMO, it's about right these days. Brass/coppe r is not as cheap as it used to be, not to mention that recoring is probably alot more labour intensive than a factory dishing out many in quick sucession.
FWIW, for a recore on my MGB I was quoted £120. 944 recore I was quoted £190 (if the tanks did not crack) or a new OE rad was £240. The Nissens alloy rad in the Pug was £60!

I'm sure they won't bite you if you ask for an explanation. Discuss it with them, and perhaps they will reveal current costs of new cores (just the parts). Then factor in R&R labor, materials, H&S compliance, ecological compliance, testing, and paint. Rad work is getting to be like hiring a copper roof repairman - a trade with fewer practitioners and many getting to retirement age to boot.

Sounds pretty good. I'm sure I paid about that for my W108 heater matrix. (Well worth it though, as new ones are over £1k!)

I used to recore radiators for a living, it takes about 20 minutes to recore a plastic tank rad and about a hour for a fl stripdown and resolder on a metal tank, not too bad to be honest

i gave them my heater matrix as well which is essentially 2 in 1 so you can have dual zone temperature control, still awaiting a price on either a double re-core or making it into a single core

Is there a catalogue anywhere that gives the dimensions of all modern (or widely available) radiators so I could leaf through and say 'that's close enough'? ta
