The traditional way was just longer spring shackles made out of flat steel and if you were posh there were chromed versions. To be honest they looked silly and ruined handling hence going out of fashion. I can't remember if Capri axle was under or over the spring. If over then simply modify to make under and you'd get 4" + of lift. This is often done to 4x4's.

Pretty sure they made jack up kits illegal (the extended shackle ones), capr axle is over the spring so you can flip the springg seats to gain some lift there. Also take into account the castor change at the front will mess with the steering.

They made extended spring shackles (extensions welded onto original shackles) illegal iirc - might be best pm-ing Scary Old Cortina to confirm.
They're not difficult to make if you've got half a clue about fabrication.

Indeed, ive made quite a few sets ove the years, and done a few spring over conversions on sj410/13's etc, just wondered whether or not it was actually illegal......
Actually all of the spring over conversions are illegal, as you have to lengthen the steering arm, which is not allowed to be joined in any way..........

Like this you mean? They were just 4 (usually about 9") lengths of 2" wide 1/4" thick steel bar with a hole at one end for the original spring mount and a choice of (usually) three adjustment holes depending on how high you wanted the back end. Usually fitted in conjunction with a painted back axle with a chrome hubcap covering the diff and (the piece de resistance) a couple of auxiliary rear fog lamps mounted underneath and renamed 'cruising lights' (which, if my memory serves me correctly, were often called 'wa*ker lights' by everyone else). Dunno about 'rat rod', this was always a peculiarly British take on the custom scene. Back in the late 70's these sort of mods went hand-in-hand with fur interiors, chain-link steering wheels, pro-stock bonnet scoops, sidepipes and were de rigeur if you were a hot young buck with a Mk1 Cortina and a Richard Grant centre console full of Eagles and Doobie Bros 8-track cartridges. ;D

Illegal? News to me and I'd be very surprised if they were. I made some a while back to lower my Rascal, but the principle is the same....and it cost me next to nothing: £12 for the polybushes and the rest was just made from bits & pieces cut, drilled etc... Details here: retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=modifypost&thread=42909&post=854869Should be pretty easy to make some for another car, but just make sure you make them twice as long as the lift you want to acheive.

MoT manual ref 2.4.6 (leaf springs) says this but also says To me that says that well made or modified replacement shackles are fine, but dodgy ones aren't. simples

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

know a lad with a mk1 capri thats got extended shackles on with about 3 sets of holes so he can lower and raise his capri as he wishes, never had a problem with MOTs, they are very much like what Mystery Machine has posted up, nice and simple idea and work perfectly!

I thought spring clamps were illigal as they could pop off, or snap springs, and are usually only made to stand compressing a spring for purpose of removal?
id not heard of leaf spring shackles or lowering 'blocks' being illigal, just as long as there used correctly, common sense etc.
