hi,
driving on A60/A52 in Nottingham and saw what i thought was a speed cam van..plain white with blacked out back windows...
it pulled off in front of me and i realized it had foreign plates on it..probably German..must be a camper van then.
then it joined a VOSA 4wd in a layby on A52....wasnt a camper van
is this the latest in speed camera deviousness...anyone know or seen it?

I believe that mobile speed cameras have to be clearly marked as such, in the same way that fixed ones are supposed to be yellow. Mind you, they are only guidelines, so if the local force chooses not to comply with them, it is not a defense against a speeding ticket. then again, I think the guidlines lapsed at the beginning of June, so anything is possible (and likely)

I have seen loads in plain white! ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) Remember an article a few years back, where two guys walked upto a camera van showing interest in the equipment, the officer on board was showing one guy and waffling on while the other guy unscrewed the front no-plate off the van, later screwing it to their own car before racing up and down the road 7 times !!!! Because the camera automatically sends info direct to a national office where another computer prints the tickets, the MET recieved 7 tickets to their selfs!!!!! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Quality!

There is one in are area in the back of a horse lorry. Dyfed Powys police do like to hide their vans around corners and the horse lorry is just plain devious. They also don't wash the camera vans everyday like normal police vehicles.

so a van on foreign plates with blacked out glass pulled into a layby with a VOSA van. Perhaps he was a civilian getting a tug for illegal tints and fake euro plates?
On the eastern run of the A52 they do a lot of tugs looking for illegal imegrants working in big picking gangs going out Lincoln. VOSA are usually involved 'cos the vans and trucks aren't licenced to carry passengers and imigration services checking IDs.

Unless it had the drop down windows to let the camera pop out from. Even if it was foreign, it could've been new equipment on trial from the manufacturer?

Then the police should go to the country it was manufactured to test it.
Was it a new shape transit or mk6 shape?
Certain car auctions sell a lot of ex-camera vans(mk6 shape)
Possibly been purchased over here then re registered overseas in germany.
They would make a great camper conversion though!

Done a bit of reading on mobile speed cameras after reading this thread; conclusion: due to their being mounted in vans (which move) or being used handheld, they are likely to produce inaccurate readings. Contest a ticket if you think you weren't speeding, the machines are fallible.
On a lighter note, from Wikipedia:
Lottery
Kevin Richardson proposed the idea of rewarding drivers travelling at or below the posted limit with a cash lottery, funded by the fines on speeding drivers. This was demonstrated in Stockholm, Sweden, in November 2010.

At risk of turning this into a mega scamera thread, if you're in Hampshire stick to the limit on the A303 west of the A34 past the Barton Steacy services. I've been travelling that road a lot in the last five months and every couple of days I've seen either a van or a motorcycle trafpol with a handheld in the dip just before the services.
Also if you're traveling south on the A34 obey the 60 and 50 limits as you approach Winchester. The vans sit on the central resevation as you come just past the 50 signs; you have about 0.25 second to slow down!!
For what it is worth for ages I haven't seen a van on the Wiltshire stretch of the A303 from Andover as far as Stonehendge. Of course I'm not responsible if you *do* get done!!

And I've passed there at least 30 times in 2 years. I'll keep it in mind though, I'm generally within the limits on a run though. It's all tickling that throttle for those MMPGs (mega miles per gallon)

i once saw a cam van with orange lights on top and a dirty scruffy appearance and quite oldish probably to resemble a builders van?.... so tend to eyeball any van parked up on the side of the road..
and no i wasnt speeding, and it wasn't "tugged" by Vosa....neither of these being the point of this thread...just always intrigued by everyday stuff out there in road land and of course had to share...;-)
and being in a van myself i wasnt able to see if it was a left hooker or not after it had pulled in unfortunately
