It looks like I haven't posted any images in this thread since January last year so it's probably time for an update! All from last year, All images copyright Michael Gillett 2014, no reproduction without permission. The first picture I found very impressive but the old Scimitar has just blown me away (and not just because I won one). Even more so as you've drawn it from the rear quarter as opposed to the more common front quater. I'd love to have that hanging on my wall.

The owner of that Scimitar does have a copy hanging on his wall

Using all the same tools and materials as usual, just with a slightly different approach to the inking. Glad you really like it as I'm intending to explore this style further.

Just finished this: Still haven't made my mind up about acrylics but I'll persevere for now

Proportion, lighting and colour all seem really well understood. I think they only thing holding back the quality is the textured paper, but even then that's only a minor niggle for me with this. Switch to a smooth paper like Bristol Board or even use mount board (the stuff you use in picture frames) and you should end up with some amazing results.
Out of interest, what size are you working at and what are you using to get digital copies of the work? I'm pretty disappointed with my scanner, it tends to be very unkind to my blending which hasn't happened with yours.

I like it on that textured canvas.
I wouldn't even know where to start looking at the pictures on here.

Point taken about the canvas - this was a small (A4) relative quickie, I'd normally gesso a canvas at least a couple of times to take the edge off it. Just being lazy here! Will try Bristol/mounting board next time - used to use it when I worked in gouache back in the day These are more my usual style, large oils on canvas: The Astra picture was a quick iPhone point and shoot, but scanned it this morning at work on our new copier and got a decent A2ish high res PDF out of it, just needs a bit of tidying up at that size.

Well now, that's just showing off Seriously though, that's some excellent quality work with the shoes, it's how I was imagining the Astra would have looked on smoother paper. Your painting style looks very smooth which acrylic is good for in some ways but only if you start with a smooth surface, it seems really unforgiving of a less than perfect canvas unlike what I've seen others achieve with oils. I've never had the confidence to use oils myself and with no dog-free space I can only imagine if I did pick up the confidence I'd end up with a very furry canvas before it had finished drying.

Thanks Oils are great if you've got time to allow them to dry; acrylics are the opposite for me at the moment and dry too fast! Going to experiment a bit with retarding agents and smooth board and see how it goes. I'd seriously consider giving oils a go though, barring the possible doghair contamination they're great to use and excellent to blend depending on the medium you use.

If you use a drying time increaser, be aware it can act a bit strangely with some acrylics. If you're using high pigment acrylics you likely won't get an issue, but some of the more regular ones turn into something the consistency of egg very quickly and have this habit of separating. I used to use a Derwent flow enhancer which was quite good but not had need of it in years, I can't remember exactly what it was called, might have just been 'flow enhancer'.
I've got a new picture I'm working on which is another style experiment, but not in oils. I'm hoping it's not going to be a disaster, we shall see. Maybe when I move into a house that I can have a dedicated art room that's dog-free I'll try oils.

Look forward to seeing that! I got a combined office/studio (and a garage!) when we moved and that's made things a lot easier - before that it meant leaving wet oil paintings lying around in the kitchen where I painted. I'm sure you can imagine that hilarity ensued more than once I'm going to invest in some high-pigment acrylics, used them last time I painted with them (a commission for work) and they seemed pretty good. The ones I'm using now were a Christmas present!

Whatever you do, avoid anything by Galeria. Their stuff is the worst quality, especially the acrylics. Thankfully I never spent money on them, but I was given some to use and it was just the most frustrating stuff to use with barely any coverage. Horrible. My preference is for Derwent and Windsor & Newton, decent middle-range stuff that's quite versatile and affordable and easy to get. There's better quality gear out there but it has a price tag to match.

Last one I did, work was paying so got decent materials Got rid of em all seeing as I didn't think I'd use acrylics again, which with hindsight was a stupid move, but think I'll invest in some mid-price gear and see what it's like.

I mentioned an experiment, and here it is. I want to explore this art style a bit further, I can see areas I can improve and areas I'm happy with. Pleasantly surprised by the end result, I was expecting this to work less well than it does.

Cool, that is effective. When are you drawing the Ambassador? You say that like there's a specific Ambassador I should draw. An Ambassador would work well in that treatment though, plenty of black plastics to work with for it.
