I have a bit of a problem lusting after the W126 500 (or 560) SEC in Buffalo Soldiers - what are they actually like to own? Are they painfully expensive in the spare parts department/a pain to work on?

Tonycocacola's your man. I don't think they're that much more expensive parts-wise than any other Merc. And I reckon you could pick most parts up at GSF / Euro. Besides, they never go wrong do they? ;D They're damn fine machines - really look the business!

I followed one today, and thought how freaking ace they seem to glide along - but it had really nasty wheels.

mine at C.a.R.S i bought mine from the bottom end of the scale, paid 1k. mot is due next week so il be able to tell you how expensive they are to repair. its definately gonna need a bit of welding and the handbrake doesnt work at all. driving wise, they're great. loads of power and torque, and as smoothe as a very polished smoothe thing sliding across a very polished smoothe surface. on a run they're not too bad on juice. i did 504 miles to C.a.R.S and home using £90s worth, which works out at 25mpg. round town, however, they drink the petrol, lowest mpg was 8!!!! they sound great, but don't be expecting the noise of a yank, you cant hear them on tickover.

There's a huge buying guide in PPC this month - a few prices for spares they quote: lower ball joints - £150 a side fitted wheel sensor (normally what's behind any ABS faults, apparently) - £90 radiator - £180 used auto box is a couple of hundred quid, or £1200 for an overhaul rear window - £600 (eek) parcel shelf panel - £700+ for someone to sort out for you wings - £300 new grille - £125 2nd hand / £300 new chrome bumper trim - £400 new
Looks like you should find the one with the best bodywork possible, really...

Not sure, but the article had a lot of quotes from these people, so I'd assume maybe via them? Doesn't sound like they're that easy to get hold of, either.

They rot quicker than pears though. That said, they look cool as beans and go like the clappers. Christoff has a rather delicious one I believe.

Christoff has a rather delicious one I believe. Indeed he has, and it's for potentially for sale for a rather reasonable price. It's been sat at my place since April, but he collected it last night and it's just about to get a fresh MoT.

Yup yup yup. Fresh MOT yesterday after brand new brakes all round (4 discs, 4 pairs of pads and 2 pairs of shoes (for handbrake) and two flexi's for under £200 from GSF). Fantastic fantastic cars if you can afford the fuel. My SEC does between 8 and 18 to the gallon! They are a weekends work to LPG though.
Also, never buy a rusty one. If it looks a bit rough - I guarantee it will be very rough when you get into it! Make sure the engine is smooth, and has an idle no more than 800rpm - any more is big trouble to fix! Post '87 models are the best for spec and have the much better looking smooth side trim and bumpers. If the bumpers are rusty, they will stay rusty, as they cost a fortune to replace. Most other parts are cheap and readily available either pattern part or from a Merc scrappy.
I've had three now - 380SEC, 420SEC and now 560SEC. Although I love the 300hp grunt of the 5.6v8, I have to say that the 4.2 is the best in terms of power (240hp) verses fuel economy.
I was going to sell, but unless someone comes along with £3k, I am going to fit the hydraulics ready to escort my mates future wife to her wedding in December.
If you want any info/help on them (w126's that is, not my firends future wife), feel free to give me a shout.

Well I have a little experience with W126's 500 sel in fact, similar car. Bought one for £450 & drove it to Africa on the Plymouth-Dakar rally. Now when I say bombproof I mean it!!!. Fantastic machine, ours had 190k on the clock it didn't miss a beat the whole 4500mile trip, only fault was the cruise wouldn't work above 55mph so we ended up averaging 26mpg!!! and I boiled the brakes coming down the Tiz-n-test pass in the Atlas mountains which was interesting Here she is, seriously cool cars & I'm seriously thinking of an SEC as a tow car.
