I seem to recall a while back reading the powers that be were going to stop you being able to sell a car with the tax in, something about trying to stop uninsured drivers being on the road.
Anyone know what happened with this new idea?

The car either has to have an active insurance policy in place, or it needs to be SORNd, one or the other.
So if the car you are trying to sell has tax, but you have already cancelled the insurance, you must SORN it and cash in the remainder of the tax.
If you still have an active insurance policy on the car, you can leave the tax on it, and cancel the insurance as soon as the car is sold.
There is no law in place which says you cannot sell a car with tax in the window, but you must abide by the rules above.

You can sell a car with tax, but you're not allowed to keep a car with tax unless it's insured.
So as long as you're currently insured on your car, the tax can stay on it. If you cancel/transfer the insurance, then technically you have to cash the tax in and SORN the car.
Personally I think it's a stupid rule - a lot of cars for sale nowadays will come with no tax due to this insurance thing! Great for the new owner who has to then sort the tax out the same time as buying the car.

Basically, it's illegal to own a taxed but uninsured vehicle. So long as it's insured by you, then you can sell it with as much tax as you like - it's up to the new owner to ensure he has adequate insurance.... EDIT: Too slow - what they said

Personally i would leave the tax on the car, as it helps the sale, just make sure the buyer is insured for the car before selling it (the buyer needs insurance for the test drive anyway)

Actually a thought - Can you SORN without surrendering the tax ? Might be a way around the stupid law if the car is only off the road / awaiting to be sold for a short while.

No, you can't.
It's a flaming ridiculous rule, frankly. I understand what they want to accomplish, but they're going about it the wrong way.

couldn't agree more you either cash the tax back in (and therefore cannot use the car on the road for a test drive) or keep it on and risk a fine but use temp insurance to drive it legally. Either way it's a load more ballache to sell a car now than it was before.

just another way of getting more cash out of the driver! so you sell your car on the 10th of the month, cash in the remaining tax but losing the rest of that month New owner then has to tax it asap, which means back-dating it to the beginning of the month so effectively the car is taxed twice for that month, under two different people! gets my goat !!

It's gonna end up where there are huge amounts of cars for sale at the 1st on the month and none added for the rest as people will won't want to lose part of a months tax.

but when new owner tries to tax he'll get one of the following
can't tax as its still taxed (records not updated) can't tax as not insured (records not updated) can't tax online as not in thier name (records not updated)
mate recently had this when bying a car on sat teatime had all relevent docs, money, etc so contacted local copshop who agreed its nuts & gave him thier details incase we where stoped driveing it back from birmingham to sheffield.
