I want to find out which models have this engine (I know of Calibra and Astra GSi?), and what the external dimensions are of the engine.....so if anyone here has one in their car could they measure the following...... width height length track width What's the bhp in standard form? Is there another version of this engine (I'm sure I've heard of a blue top engine as well)? All will be revealed if the measurements are right.....

They are 150bhp as standard, and very reliable. The other 'top' engines you are talking about are probably the ecotek units - avoid. In terms of size it's about the same as a Zetec, conveniently I have one up for grabs

If you're going to be running on carbs, no reason not to use an eco-tec. Once all the emmisions gubbins is junked they are very good engines. One thing to watch out for with a redtop is that the heads have a tendency to go porous. Some of them had "Coscast" heads, which are supposed to be OK, but have heard of a couple of these do it as well. Your best bet for more info on these would be www.migweb.co.uk/Hth

Careful of MigWeb related advice it rarely comes from the horses mouth, a lot of info is hearsay.
Something to bare in mind is that people started desiring the XE for transplants over a decade ago and finding a good one at a good price isn't easy.
Cars that had them were
Astra Mk2 GTE, Astra Mk3 Gsi, Cavalier GSI and some Cavalier and Calibra 16v's.
The Ecotek is often coined the EcoWreck, I'm not sure why or if there's good reasoning for it. As 1900sr says it might be a great carbed alternative that's more readily available.

the only reason i can think for the ecotec being called ecowreck is because it makes less power as standard. the ecotec makes more torque lower down and is better for emmissions, most likely cause of less peak power.

does anyone know if the ecotec 2.0 /2.2 bolts up to the manta /carlton ohc box?
also what else is needed, is the ecotec wiring hard to splice into a standard loom( ive heard the xe loom is fairly easy to chop in, but ecotecs are much easier to find.)

beware of migweb full stop..... zero useful information and everyone trying to rip each other off!
Ecotek was really the 'every day' engine, not really used in performance applications like the redtop, it superceded the 8v 2.0 in models such as the Astra and Cav CD. One thing to note is if you're buying from an Astra GTE they did do 8v versions of that car (it won't be a redtop) so make sure it's a 16v you're getting! like i said, those vauxhall people do like to make money quick.....

yeah there was a good article on Ecotecs in PPC not so long ago, apparently the block is almost identical to the redtop, so no probs for RWD installations using those famous manta bits.

Red top (C20XE) engines are famous with good reason...most of the info has been covered above. 150ish bhp but beware porosity in non-coscast heads (easily identifiable after some Googling) as stated above. I have to say that the Ecotec (X20XEV), which replaced the red top, is a truly superb engine. The only niggles you might have are with the crank sensor, knock sensor, cam sensor (note - electricals, not the engine!) and that's it. All can be replaced on the cheap. These have 136bhp as standard and more torque than the XE...so overlooked it's just untrue! I scanned the PPC ecotec tuning feature at the time and stuck it on another forum I use - here it is! I might be completely wrong here, but I have always understood that the ecotek is not as good for tuning for out and out power (something to do with the angle of the valves). I remember reading something about this in CCC years ago. Still possible to make over 200bhp out of them but needs a bit more work than a XE.
Standard ecoteks`s are a nice engine for daily running though.
One other point that might be worth considering is that some if not all ecoteks need a signal from the transponder in the ignition key for the engine to start so its better to get the full loom and keys.

ecotex has a narrower head than the xe which is geared towards emissions and limits your options for crazy lift valves, eats through its sensors like has been mentioned, and a lot of them i have seen in scrapyards have snapped cambelts.
if you want an out and out race engine look at the xe, if you want something that wont be as good but could cost lest to buy then get an ecotec I'm sure in a road car you will barely notice the difference.

I don't think they are prone for snapped timing belts. I think its more people don't realise when they need changing and just keep on driving until they go bang. Or sell them before they do

But the place is a haven for miss-information, hearsay and tuning fashions. Someone pointed out the 2 8v SEH lump from the Astra and Cavalier. Indeed watch out for those but bare in mind they look totally different to the XE. They aren't bad either with drivable 130bhp.

So if I was thinking of putting one in the Rocco I should get an Ecotec?
