How silly an idea is that? I have a split leather cover on the trans am wheel and I just spent 30 minutes trying to get the wheel off to fit a Grant one but it won't budge. I was worried I might break the column (the steering lock released LOL) so latteral thinking says use a steering wheel glove or maybe wrap it with handle bar tape. I've totally curse word what was left of the leather cover trying to get it off... Never had so much bother getting a wheel off, normally they come off with some pursuasion. Anyway, tape...

Negative. I wrapped the wheel of my lawn mower (don't ask) and it lasted about two weeks before it went to hell. I used decent quality tape and took my time with it too, so not a lash-up, but the tape just couldn`t cope with the type of abrasion it gets when steering.

I'm gonna say the opposite to Dave. I had it on my Scirocco because the standard VW wheel had gone shiny and slippery, and I worked in a bike shop. It worked really well, and although I only used cheapy tape and did a bit of a rush job (I was intending to see how it went, then re-do it with nice tape if it was good, but never got around to it.) I can't remember exactly how long I had it on there, but it was at least 6 months with only 1 or 2 small nicks in it where it wasn't wrapped tight enough, done properly with decent tape it'd last for much longer. The only reason I took it off was because the added thickness of the tape on top of the standard wheel made it a bit too chunky for my liking, but thinner tape or removing the original covering first would solve that. You can sort of see it in this picture:

Remind me to not be on the road when that's on the road. 100000000 point turn to get into a bay anyone?
I used a punch to get the wheel off the Cinq. In the middle of the wheel with the nut removed. Sharp wallow on the punch with a hammer and the wheel popped off.

I tried a 3 arm gear puller and a 8 lb sledge hammer before I gave up. Seriously the steering column was going to give...
I've found a guy with the right sort of multi wheel puller on the eBay, I might as well own one

If that doesn't work, try some pipe freeze spray on the column. It should shrink enough to break the bond between the column and wheel.

Remember those proper leather look stitch on replacements? One of those might do although the last time I actually saw one was around 1989...

Well wrapped bar tape shouldn't actually need any glue to hold it in place, in fact a fair few makes don't bother with it at all, and the ones that do only have the adhesive in a ~8mm strip down the middle. You just wrap it tight and hold it in place at the ends.

i suggest (for removal) spraying half a can of wd40 on the joint and leaving overnight
usually works for me
try not to smack yourself in the face with the wheel when it suddenly lets go - thats not fun
