Advice needed - exhaust.tigran

I have been pondering whether to make up my own exhaust for the viva in following with the whole rat idea behind the car. Perhaps get the sectioning from jetex or use some scaffolding to keep it 'hood'. Well whilst I was pondering this I came across indecently cheap prices for Larini SS systems in retro ford.
I always thought Larinin did high end systems for ferraris, lamborghinis and so on - what are they doing mucking about with old (comparative) buckets?
Are they to be trusted? What are their systems like - any help/advice appreciated.
Ta.

I've never heard of Larinin, so cant comment there. But funnily enough I am making an exhaust today! I'm cheating a bit, using an existing tubular mild steel manifold that has the correct manifold-to-head plate, but cutting off all the tubes and welding in ones that are heading in the right direction for my planned system. Scaffold pipe would be the wrong guage I reckon, too thick and therefore very heavy, but the correct diameter and guage tube is readily available from any metal suppliers for very cheap, and all sorts of bends are available to buy from Ashley Exhausts. Or if you want to get really ghetto, go down the scrappers and cut off bits that you need from other systems along with any silencers you might want to throw into the mix and weld them together, which is my plan I reckon HTH! Edit: How cheaps cheap for these Larinin systems out of interest??

Sounds good! I'll post up a thread in the next day or two of the one i'm making, its going really well and it should be much better than the one at the moment which catches on EVERYTHING! Might throw an itty bitty little silencer on there, but maybe not, heheh

How silencer-less can you go without getting done by dibble and MOT chap? I realise this is a variable length of piece of string question, but my plan is to have just one silencer calming things down at the end... TonyCC said removing those silences made his Merc quieter and more powerful! Win

Well i've always thought that it would be too loud for everyday use...... but the MOT station, to my knowledge, has no means to test the decibel level of an exhaust, so I don't see any problems there. If the plod pulled you over for it, they would have to give you one of those producers where you take it to a garage to get stamped once the defect is rectified..... but again the garage cannot test the decibel level so I don't think it could be enforced!

Great. Am i right in thinking that some race tracks have a gripe with noise, although i realise that that level will be pretty noisy anyway. Just hear how noisy some bikes are! Plan A still going ahead then.

100db ish is the limit for tracks. I might just get a glass packed silencer on a flange I can bolt on, bolt off, bolt on, bolt off [/mr myagi]

A lot of tracks have a limit or 98db which is not all that loud at all. The plod will still do you for having a very loud exhaust on gthe road even if it's not an MOT-able item ...they just do you for being a public nuisance or something. To be honest, on the road i don't think having a very loud exhaust is particularly wise anyway. It just annoys people, attracts attention and makes you look a bit of a chump unless you have several litres of V8 up front.

It's more for cheapness reasons than anything. I wouldn't choose to have a loud exhaust - but if it is the choice of that or paying a hundred pounds or so for suitable silencing then I will have to chance the producer. Besides the zetec units don't make all that much noise.
Guess there is only one way to find out.

Making exhausts yourself is always hit and miss as far as sound and volume goes so you will just have to try it and see. i usually take a trip to my local tyre and exhaust centre and go shopping in their skip for some nice buts of tune and an assortment of silencers. You an usually knock up a spot on system for nothing that way although it's a right chore to do. Not half as much of a chore as making an entire system out of straight tube by making lots of pie cut bends though. Been there!

I'll have 3.5 litres of V8 coming through mine, want to tame thould beasts roar and have things as free flowing as possible, so if i need to use a trick or decent silencer i will, cos i do intend to enjoy it on the track too.

When I had my Rover V8 powered Datsun 280C, that had a home made system that joined into one for a single tail pipe (for packaging reasons) and it only had one cherry bomb as a silencer right at the back. Strangely that had a real beefy rumble but wasn't actually very loud at all. Some hot rod dude once tole me that Rovers sound best with the silencers right up front after the headers and just plain pipe from their on. Dunno if it's true but his rod sounded awesome

Woah woah woah, no exhaust also works on small engined cars! I think mine sounded ACE! watch out for using bends out of old systems, they are galvanised. This makes it difficult to weld, and when it does it gives off jolly noxious fumes, not good for you at all! Ashley on the other hand do very good quality mandrel bends with long tails in mild steel, just ready for hitting up with the welder of your choice I suggest a bike can sticking out of the rear, or no silencer and a nice oval exit out the side. Cheers J
