recently sold the sceptre to jaminben on here, all was fine and dandy and then a cheapo french diesel appeared for sale on a neighbours drive, small engine tax an test.. ok a bit rough but was cheap so I snapped it up.. now the bloody thing is playing me up, if I go to it cold it starts on the button, few seconds of glowplug light and away it goes, if I then turn it off when warm no amount of anything gets it to go again unless I leave it 5-10 minutes and then it starts perfect again.. its a peugeot 106 1527cc diesel think the engine is Tud5 naturally aspirated... by way of thanks have some utterly stunning classics I would have in my garage in a heartbeat.... (and of course top of the list) thanks ! ! ! ;D

Hmm, that usually points to the valve clearances having closed up, they are shimmed on those so can be a bit of a pain to sort, but not impossible.

but would it cool enough in five minutes to start again.. ? yeah heard they were shims.. that makes it something I wont be attempting to be honest

Well the gaps close up over time, I guess when the car is hot, they are tight enough to hold the valves open, meaning there just isn't enough compression to get her going.

Next time it happens check there a live at the shut off vakve on the pump (IF that is you can get to it? ) Alternativley next time pour water over the pump and try again, it that sorts it the pump is worn, when it does start is there a cloud of white smoke? that would indicate leaking injector, it could on a modern leccy controled pump be the ECU temp sender?

Hi , have confirmed feed to the pump shut off solenoid when it wont start, no smoke when starting, I'm gonig to whip plunger out of stop solenoid an see if that stops it playing up, if it does then I know whats going on, seems weird it had been fine for 600 odd miles then all of a sudden.. didnt want to play anymore... also weird it will still go for 60 mile drive and have no issues (god help me if I stall it though)
I did actually try that.. stalling it when parked up to see if it was the actual act of shutting the stop solenoid that was making it play up but was still the same

now a complete non runner.... tried to get to the stop solenoid which for some reason is behind a stainless cast anti tamper security cover 12mm thick on end of pump.. (like someone wouldnt just feed it with power anyways.. ) and now it don't even try to fire..

The reason the pump solenoid is covered is cos it's part of the immobiliser, you can just run a live to the pump and bumpstart most older diesels hence very easy to steal. The engines in them are complete turd, good on fuel but total rubbish. Try bumpstarting it,if it doesn't go,look toward that solenoid but if it does look more toward the compression side of things I.e those valve clearances. Also, try a decent battery on it,people are fooled into believing that cos it's a small engine it starts easily, they don't,iirc they run a ridiculous compression ratio. I had one that was 3 years old and the engine failed on me on the m4,crankshaft main oilseal went, peugeout washed their hands of it,I ended up paying £4000 for a car that sat in a garage for 3 years in dispute with the garage, peugeout and my ex missus!!!!
Get rid and buy a petrol one, their much better cars.

If you have been fiddling under the bonnet, it is worth checking you haven't tripped the fuel cutoff switch by mistake: It is the red circle top right in this pic, although the location varies dependant on engine. I have to disagree with the above comment, although it is first hand experience of one of these engines that was curse word, I look after several cars with this mill that are all well into the 100k+ without any major woes.

HI
No technical input I'm afraid but I have to come to the rescue of the little derv... I had one of these as a first car and it was belting, In 4 years it never broke down or refused to start once. It had 166,000 miles on it when I sold it and the bloke that bought it drove it to Latvia with no trouble??
There are a few "monday morning/friday afternoon" cars out there but this happens to all makes and models. Good luck with your pump search and hope it solves your problem.

hi finally managed to get to the stop solenoid today (even though pump casing cracked) and once I had a feed to it it started straight up (once bled) so a pump will cure it..
